Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (www.outdoors.org) is the oldest conservation and recreation organization in the United States. The AMC mission is to foster the protection, enjoyment and understanding of the outdoors, with a focus on the mountains, forests, rivers and trails from Washington, DC to Maine. The AMC encourages the involvement of all people in its mission and activities, through its membership, programs, policies, and procedures.

The Ponkapoag Camp Summer Manager reports to and works closely with the Executive Committee Chair and assists in all aspects of facility operation located in Randolph, MA. They will supervise the waterfront coordinator on duty, will set and monitor daily objectives, and conduct regular performance evaluations. The Manager is responsible for all daily operations and is therefore expected to maintain hospitality and the overall camp management.

This seasonal full-time position is based at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Ponkapoag Camp in Randolph, MA.

Located along the banks of a 230-acre Ponkapoag Pond in the 8,500-acre DCR Blue Hills Reservation, this purposefully rustic camp offers a wilderness experience just 15 minutes from Boston. We are a volunteer-managed camp that is committed to help preserve this critical environmental area and keep the Ponkapoag spirit alive!

The Camp Manager works under the direction and supervision of the Ponkapoag Executive Committee Chair or their designee and has coordinating relationships with several members of the AMC staff.


What you’ll be doing:

  • Act as primary facility decision maker and supervisor of staff.
  • Required to spend most nights at Ponkapoag.
  • Responsible for the welfare, maintenance, and upkeep of all buildings and grounds.
  • Ensure cleanliness and attractiveness of cabins by conducting weekly cabin inspections between renters.
  • Hold daily office hours (typically 8:30am – 12:00pm).
  • Open and close lodge daily; maintain lodge cleanliness.
  • Supervise waterfront operations.
  • Coordinate with Education Committee to confirm and schedule education programs.
  • Plan, post and announce camp events.
  • Conduct camp training with staff.
  • Monitor reservations daily and check for changes.
  • Clerical duties including guest and camp paperwork.
  • Conduct weekly reporting of guest statistics.
  • Oversee housekeeping inventory and restock purchases.
  • Assist with local marketing and outreach strategies.
  • Perform all additional duties and tasks as assigned.

What we are looking for:

  • A college degree is preferred; equivalent outdoor education, program and facility management training and experience may be substituted for the college degree.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule and live at Ponkapoag Camp for the summer.
  • Exceptional public service skills, professionalism, and a commitment to the mission of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance tasks.
  • Prior housekeeping and maintenance experience and management required.
  • Knowledge of basic outdoor conservation and recreation.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work effectively with little supervision.
  • Ability to effectively lead a team.
  • Success in performing a variety of duties with careful attention to detail.
  • Ability to work long or abnormal shifts.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office required.
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized.
  • Must be highly flexible, adaptable, and resourceful.
  • Experience in management, finances, retail and/or hospitality helpful.
  • Knowledge of local trails and the Blue Hills Reservation is helpful.
  • Driver’s license and clean driving record required.
  • Physical abilities: Ability to stand, sit, bend at waist, carry up to 30 pounds, lift up to 20 pounds from floor level to waist level. The manager will need to be able to climb stairs, walk uneven trail-terrain among facilities spread around the camp, and handle temperature extremes in this rustic setting. The manager will need to be able to work at a computer.


Compensation and benefits:

  • Salary Range: $7,500 / season
  • Onsite housing + meals provided for FREE
  • Free use of AMC Destinations: 4 nights per year
  • Free annual AMC membership

  • Matching 403(b): 4% with vesting schedule
  • Paid Sick Time: eligible to accrue up to 10 days
