Emma Kaufmann Camp is located along Cheat Lake in Morgantown WV. Owned and operated by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, EKC is a co-ed residential camp with an emphasis on teambuilding, developing positive values, independence, premiere programming and activities. Camper Care Specialists at Camp are responsible for supporting the campers and staff members to achieve individual success for each member of the camp community. Camper Care Specialists assist staff members with managing the social dynamics and behavior of their campers, while assisting them in meeting camper needs. Camper Care Specialists will regularly speak with parents of campers to elicit collaborating in achieving success for their camper.

Care and consideration is given to each candidate’s summer availability, including flexibility in working around start and end dates due to school work or other employment opportunities. The Camper Care Specialist will work in partnership with the entire Camper Care team, and will report to the Camp Director or Assistant Director. This position is an “in-residence” position and requires living at Camp throughout the summer.

Responsibilities/Expectations

  • Manage and assist with any camper concerns in your designated unit
  • Partner with Camper Care Team to ensure every child within the camp community is happy, healthy, safe and successful at camp.
  • Monitor and support the mental, emotional, and social health wellbeing of the campers and staff in your designated unit.
  • Collaborate and partner with cabin staff to meet the individual needs of all campers.
  • Attend camper care update meetings with Camper Care Team as scheduled.
  • Review relevant camper forms prior to general staff week and support unit heads and counselors in in preparing to accommodate individual camper’s needs in advance of their arrival at camp.
  • Communicate with parents via email and phone call as needed or directed by the Camper Care Team.
  • Work in collaboration with Inclusion Coordinator and support inclusion counselors in managing campers that participate in EKC’s inclusion program.
  • Participate in cabin activities daily in order to better understand camper behaviors and cabin social dynamics in order to support counselors and specialists as they navigate and accommodate camper needs.
  • Document camper concerns and interactions as necessary.
  • Work with Unit Heads to manage lost and found; collecting, laundering, and returning.
  • Assist other Head Staff members in general head staff responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications/Characteristics

  • Experience working with children in a variety of settings
  • Understanding of social dynamics and intervention strategies with children
  • Ability to communicate with parents and children
  • Educational background as an educator, school guidance counselor, social worker or in a related degree or profession is preferred but not required.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Attend Head Staff Training: May 31 – June 10
  • Attend General Staff Orientation, Dates June 11 – June 18
  • Complete duties as assigned.
  • Attend all staff meetings as directed.

Time Off

  • Two 42-hour days off during Session 1
  • One 42-hour days off during Session 2
  • Additional time off for family events and college will be given on a case by case basis
  • Camp will not grant special time off for concerts or other non-family events

Physical Qualifications While performing duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.

Must be able to obtain ACT 33/34 and FBI clearances, and mandated reporter training.
