In partnership with individuals and organizations, DNR staff manage fish, wildlife, forests, parks, air and water resources while promoting a healthy, sustainable environment and a full range of outdoor opportunities.

The Wisconsin DNR is hiring an LTE – Campground Manager at Northern Highland State Forest in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin.

Position Summary


The Northern Highland American Legion State Forest has a unique work experience for those who enjoy camping and interacting with people. The state forest is hiring campground managers to live and work at rustic campgrounds on the forest. This position will be the front-line staff member who will interact with campers at these campgrounds. Campground managers are required to live in the campground they are assigned to and perform customer service, janitorial, maintenance, and light landscaping duties. Applicants must be able to provide their own camping unit (hard-sided is preferred).

These positions are responsible for a combination of outdoor maintenance, groundskeeping, and janitorial work in addition to providing customer service for property visitors and/or campers. This a unique opportunity where Parks and Recreation Specialists in these positions are required to live onsite in a campground in a camping unit that they provide.

45% - Perform the maintenance of grounds and facilities in the assigned campground(s) to ensure they conform to established standards to include mow grass, pick up litter, clean public use areas and beaches, painting, maintaining restrooms and campsites, remove trees and brush, operate vehicles and light equipment and perform repairs and maintenance to equipment and buildings.

20% - Direct other team members and assist in the collection of fees and dissemination of information as appropriate.Assist in the collection of fees and dissemination of information while working within campgrounds. Use computerized reservation and reporting systems. Sell admission stickers to public. Provide answers to visitor questions concerning the specific park or geographic area, as well as explain the area's recreational opportunities, interpretive services, concessions and campground availability.

20% - Explain State Property rules, regulations and fees to visitors. Manage the campground and its facilities to protect public health and safety.

10% - Manage admission sticker account and other fee charges including properly and accurately handling and remitting funds.

5% - Assist in other duties as assigned.

Salary Information


$17 per hour

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. LTE positions do not automatically lead to permanent state employment or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employees; however, these positions do offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin.

LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours per position within a twelve-month period.

In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public
  • Customer service and cash handling experience
  • Knowledge, skills and experience of general maintenance operation
  • Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and punctual
  • Ability to work a modified schedule; nights, weekends, holidays, etc.
