The CSU Chancellor's Office, located on the waterfront adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific in downtown Long Beach, is the headquarters for the nation's largest and most diverse system of higher education. Salary

The salary range for this classification is $3,750 to $11,146 per month. The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $8,334 per month, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Campus Sustainability Manager to provide regional project management, administrative and analytical support for the Sonoma State and CSU East Bay campuses. The Campus Sustainability Manager works to manage and execute projects to reduce the campus’ environmental impact and establish campus as a leader in the field of sustainability within the CSU system. The Campus Sustainability Manager is responsible for the leadership, innovation, and management necessary to coordinate and implement the university's sustainability program.

Responsibilities

Under the general direction of the Chief of Energy, Sustainability and Transportation and in consultation with the Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management, the Campus Sustainability Manager will:

Campus Sustainability Program & Project Management

  • Plan, develop and implement the campuses’ sustainability program needed to pursue the sustainability goals of the CSU Board of Trustees and those of assigned campuses. Sustainability program will include, but is not limited to, reducing campus use of natural resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing single rider cars to campus, increasing transportation alternatives, and reducing waste. Serve as the liaison between the campus and CPDC and to represent the campus’ and CSU’s best interest as it relates to achieving the CSU’s carbon neutrality goals.
  • Research, coordinate and identify sustainability best practices and develop projects/programs to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Provide strategic guidance and assistance in securing resources and supporting projects that help the campus lower overall energy and water consumption, and directly manage the campus sustainability programs such as waste diversion.
  • Coordinate with various campus programs including energy and resource conservation, recycling, purchasing, transportation, materials management, and organics
  • Coordinate with campus stakeholders to help the campus achieve and exceed state and Chancellor Office mandates related to sustainability, including, but not limited to the areas of carbon neutrality, zero waste, water conservation, green procurement, transportation, and energy.
  • Provide procurement oversight for the solicitation of new technology, products, and services.
  • Plan, participate in, or provide input to sustainability-related academic curriculum discussions, diversity equity and inclusion events or initiatives, student life education and outreach activities as appropriate.
  • Manage sustainability outreach and education programs that influences user-behavior in campus staff, students, and faculty to support campus progress towards achieving net zero energy, water, and waste goals as an institution.
  • Coordinate with diverse areas of campus operations, planning design and construction, procurement, administrative services, academics, student services and auxiliary enterprises and/or auxiliary operations. Work with campus employees and students, and assume lead roles in various teams and committees that are formed to facilitate and achieve campus sustainability goals. Facilitate and coordinate all aspects of sustainable practices across the assigned campuses.
  • Identify projects, prepare funding requests, manage projects as needed and write reports.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to support CSU grant applications and project implementation. This includes providing data, discussing strategy, developing budgets, reaching out to colleagues for grant coordination. The position will work with faculty, staff, students, and campus programs to liaise between the CPDC or campus Grants Manager and campus community to ensure necessary data and supporting information is provided for grants purposes and other systemwide activities.
  • Position will regularly travel to Sonoma State and CSU East Bay, and periodically travel to other CSU campuses in need of sustainability program support.
  • Communicate both verbally and in writing with campus staff, CPDC staff, Department of General Services (DGS), California Energy Commission (CEC), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), California Air Resources Board (CARB) and other government agencies as required to administer various programs.
  • Additional campus and Chancellor’s Office support may be required as needed.

AASHE STARS reporting and tracking for assigned campuses

  • Responsible for providing direction and leadership to campus for the critical and complex area of sustainability including the tracking, reporting and coordination of the AASHE STARS program.
  • Partnership development across university program areas including facilities, academics, procurement, DE&I offices, etc.

Project Program Funding and Administration

  • Seek and evaluate feasibility of alternative financing for energy projects such as lease revenue bonds, SallieMae, ESCOs, Department of General Services (DGS), Department of Energy (DOE), and other federal and state funding programs.
  • Maintain program, monitor funds, and provide progress and financial status reports to CSU administrators and other government agencies as required.
  • Participate as campus representative in Sustainability Affinity Group meetings and office hours.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities as assigned

  • Review and analyze contracts, general terms & conditions and make recommendations to Chief of Energy, Sustainability and Transportation and Campus management, and project stakeholders.
  • Future supervision of student staff may be required
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This position requires:

  • A Bachelor's Degree, preferably in a related field such as natural resources, environmental studies, public relations, communications, or liberal arts. Must have three years of experience in environmental or sustainability initiatives. A graduate level degree and/or studies may be considered as equivalent work experience.
  • Dedication to the principals of sustainability, resilience, and carbon neutrality. Thorough understanding of the scientific and social bases for sustainability-related programs and practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, public speaking skills and ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities and multiple tasks.
  • Thorough knowledge of correct English grammar, spelling and punctuation; thorough knowledge of office methods, procedures, and practices.
  • Experience managing sustainability-related projects or programs; experience interacting with utility programs.
  • Ability to apply judgment, discretion, and initiative in performing administrative work in a variety of subjects, programs, or projects; ability to draft and prepare clean and concise cover memoranda in final form and correspondence requiring selection of materials and references from a variety of sources; ability to keep records and files; ability to interact in a professional capacity with campus staff, vendors, contractors, and executive management.
  • Ability to coordinate many different administrative tasks, determine relative importance of each, set deadlines, prioritize, and complete projects; accordingly, ability to learn, independently interpret and apply a variety of academic and organizational policies and procedures; ability to identify appropriate applications of written policies and procedures; ability to learn the operations of a department.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with personnel both within the CSU as well as outside the organization.
  • Experience with contract preparation, language, and process requirements.
  • Experience with basic budget management.
  • Operate PC and proficient in Microsoft Work; Excel, PowerPoint, calculator, and copy/scanning machine. Ability to investigate and learn new program functions if not presently known. Ability to self-study and acquire a working knowledge of standard computer software, Microsoft Office Suite, Oracle Primavera P6 or later project tracking.
