Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Housing Support is an effective team of employees providing maintenance and repair services, including a safe and secure environment for the 9000 students living in 37 residence halls and 700 apartments. Trade skills include cabinetmaking, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, electronics, sheet metal, roofing, painting and HVAC. We identify, estimate, plan and complete minor facility renovation projects via our own Housing Support internal shops, Facilities Services Construction Shops, and/or private contractors. We provide year-round, 24-hour customer service to our resident students and Housing staff. Housing Support also conducts all scheduled facility maintenance inspections within its facilities. This unit is the primary point of contact for the residence halls and dispatches the request to the appropriate shop.
Position Summary
This position is located in Housing Support. This position must perform roofing and carpentry at the journey level and have experience in shop-based cabinetmaking and furniture repair and fabricate and repair solid surface counter tops for 32 campus residence halls, two apartment communities, which consist of approximately 47 buildings. This position will have contact with students and staff and will require planning to minimize disruption to campus life.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Journey level roofing and carpentry experience and working experience in at least one of the other relevant trades (solid surface counter top, cabinetmaking). Working knowledge of normal carpentry hand and shop tools. Knowledge, skills and abilities in multi-trades including carpentry and roofing. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close. Ability to use a computer. Ability to provide excellent customer service. NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain prior to start date.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The ideal candidate will have ten or more years of experience as a journey level roofer and carpenter in an institutional or commercial environment. Have experience in all roofing systems, especially slate and shingles; and the ability to use hand and shop tools to repair and fabricate cabinets and furniture. Candidate should have the knowledge and ability to coordinate with other trades in completing projects.

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time; ability to navigate stairs and climb ladders; ability to work in small tight spaces and bend, stoop and crawl to complete work; ability to move 50 pounds; ability to work in stressful conditions and under critical timelines; ability to work with small hand tools.
