POSITION SUMMARY:
Serves as a member of the President/Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership to ensure successful operations of the YMCA branches by creating high-performance teams that help the organization grow and achieve overarching vision of strengthening community and advancing diversity, equity and inclusion. The Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for activating the Association’s strategic vision by implementing the strategic plan and its principal goals, to maximize impact in our communities. The COO also positions the Y as a community convener and collaborator to address critical social issues and protects the Association’s assets through comprehensive risk assessment and management.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises vice presidents and district vice presidents to advance the Association’s strategic plan and assure sound operations. Addresses the root cause of systemic issues rather than symptoms.
- Provides leadership and direction to the branches by coaching district vice presidents of operations and branch executives as well as by providing overall direction to the branch boards and volunteers.
- Ensures the Y is identifying and meeting community needs effectively.
- Supports and recommends organizational policies and structures that remove barriers and foster equity and inclusion for all.
- Implements and oversees a program evaluation system to ensure consistency with the Y’s cause and safety and quality standards.
- Protects the Association’s assets including its people, property, finances and reputation. Focuses on risk assessment and management, crisis planning, systems and controls, compliance, and accountability.
- Develops fundraising strategies with the CEO and Chief Philanthropy Officer to expand philanthropy and ensures achievement of branch fundraising goals.
- Monitors monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses are controlled.
- Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development, and effective, sustainable, organization-wide collaborations. Guides the organization to make tough choices about what to stop, start, and continue.
- Fosters a climate of innovation and identifies potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs.
- Leads Association Leadership Team (ALT) to ensure operational excellence, innovation and strong communication for the Association.
- Works directly with assigned committees of the board to build volunteer relationships, develop policies, oversee policy implementation and meet the related needs of the board.
- Provides direction to assigned staff in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities in achieving strategic and operating plan goals; prepares and manages associated budgets.
- Serves as a resource and participates as a leader/member of various staff committees and leadership groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors or Master's degree in Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field.
- YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
- Experience working with budgets up to 10M.
- Practiced in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives and a deep understanding of DEI principles and practices.
- Experience working in the non-profit sector, particularly with the YMCA.
- Proven experience as a COO or in a similar senior-level operations management role.
- Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to think creatively.
- Strategic mindset, decision-making, and critical thinking; with the ability to think beyond the tactical and focus on the big picture.
