Job description
The Clinical Practice Expert (CPE) is a seasoned, self-directed, clinical RN with knowledge and skills in assessing current practice, identifying areas for improvement and problem solving to improve practice through utilization of extensive resources, clinical practice guidelines and evidence-based practice. The CPE has knowledge and skillset in implementing evidence-based practice including researching, evaluating and synthesizing evidence to develop best practice standards to apply in the clinical assigned setting. The CPE possess a passion for quality improvement, adheres to safety standards and demonstrates communication skills to engage and facilitate collaborative working relationships with healthcare team members to be effective in the role.

Responsibilities:
- Demonstrates superior clinical competency and leadership. Acts as a role model for the staff.
- Assists with implementing evidenced-based practice in policies and procedures.
- Builds relationships with other departments within the hospital and seeks to problem solve across departments using problem solving methods.
- Assists with special projects to improve the quality of care across the continuum of care.
- Provides educational information to inform staff of the newest evidence-based practice.
- Proficient in translating research and evidence-based practice into clinical practice.
- Discerns clinical practice improvement needs.
- Leads quality improvement initiatives in collaboration with the Quality Advancement Team.
- Champions nursing research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement ideas and initiatives to maintain curiosity and an eagerness to implement new knowledge and ideas.
- Assumes responsibility for implementing evidence-based practice and is able to incorporate into daily practice.
- Utilizes data and performance metrics to initiate actions that produce results.
- Provides educational information to inform staff of the newest evidence-based practice.
- Proficient in translating research and evidence-based practice into clinical practice. Discerns clinical practice improvement needs and drives practice change to align with best evidence.
- Provides supervision of fidelity and outcomes to promote long-term sustainability of evidence-based practice change.
- Mentors nursing and allied health leaders on implementation of evidence-based practice.
- Ensures clinical research/evidence-based practice change projects affirm scientific merit and protection of human subjects.
- Confirms evidence-based practice change supports system, hospital and nursing key performance indicators and strategic plan as well as sustainability and patient experience goals.
- Create an environment that facilitates the team to initiate actions that produce results.
- Support and role models lifelong learning and assists others with the life learning pathway.

- Complies with all safety goals, infection prevention, and risk management policies and procedures.
- Completes annual mandatory education.
- Maintains patient confidentiality. Observes and instructs others on need for patient confidentiality.
- Follows compliance requirements for federally funded programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Compliance concerns are brought to the immediate attention of Management or the Compliance Officer.
- Effectively applies the FOCUS values and ICARE standards in all aspects of care, communication and interactions with others.
- Effectively communicates with all team members, physicians, ancillary staff and customers. Verbal communication is clear and concise. Written communication is legible.
- Mentors new staff to help meet their needs and identify areas where continued reinforcement is needed. Fosters mentoring relationships with staff.
- Expert in performance improvement and the implementation of performance improvement projects.
- Complies with HIPAA, DNV, OSHA, NIAHO, ISO and all other regulatory and accrediting agencies. Ensures assigned nursing departments comply with regulatory agency standards to be survey ready at all times.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible in meeting the needs of the unit as a Clinical Expert which may include flexible work hours to ensure meeting the needs of variable shifts.
- Works effectively with multidisciplinary team assessing needs of the patient/family and assisting in development of quality improvement that may cross over from department to department or clinical service groups.
- Scope of practice may include multiple areas. Expertise in the functioning and needs of those areas is an expectation.
Minimum Requirements

Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Master’s Degree as Clinical Nurse Specialist, Clinical Leader, Management, or Education. Research and evidence-based practice background preferred.
- Must have completed an accredited nursing program
Experience:
7 years of professional experience in the clinical service line with a minimum of 3 years leadership experience required. Proven understanding of nursing research and evidence-based practice skills.
License(s)/Certification(s):
Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
- Licensed RN in the state of Iowa or compact licensure state.
- Certification in clinical area of expertise or like certification.
- BLS
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Excellent communication skills.
- Able to lead multidisciplinary teams.
- Able to problem solve and direct others.
- Significant experience in evidence-based practice change.
- Proven success in process improvement.
