Clinical Nurse Supervisor
The Department of Dermatology is seeking a Clincial Nurse Supervisor who provides leadership to achieve unit, departmental, and institutional objectives within a rapidly changing environment. This role promotes innovation and excellence in clinical, service, and team performance. Leads initiatives to optimize clinical workflows, staff training and development, and management of the Certified Dermatology Technician (CDT) program. Provides oversight to the clinical staff (CDTs and RNs) in two of the south satellite locations—Howard County and Sibley. Applies advanced knowledge of clinical practice, unit operations, clinical informatics, research, quality and safety, and professional development to bridge clinical practice and information technology (IT), enhance quality and safety, and build staff competence in IT. They develop policy and procedures related to clinical support and nursing work within the electronic health record (EHR).
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Certified Dermatology Technician (CDT) Program (70%):
  • Organize and lead the CDT program, including developing and maintaining policies, standard operating procedures, and education materials.
  • Manage the CDT float pool, evaluate staffing levels and coordinate distribution of float CDTs, as necessary, across clinical sites.
  • Coordinate orientation of newly hired CMAs; educate, train, and administer technician skills testing.
  • Oversee certification and recertification for all CDTs.
  • Oversee annual nurse/CDT education days.
  • Monitor, review, and approve travel related expenses for float CDTs.
Clinical Staff Oversight – South Clinics (Howard County and Sibley) (15%):
  • Oversee clinical competencies and develop clinical staff across the clinics located in the south—Howard County and Sibley locations.
  • Identify initial and ongoing educational needs of nursing staff utilizing a variety of teaching strategies, the nursing process, and principles of adult learning.
  • In collaboration with other leaders, facilitate nursing staff competencies, including clinical practice standards, regulatory requirements, and integration of new equipment and technology.
  • Participate in development, implementation, and maintenance of clinical policies and procedures.
  • Participate in departmental, unit, and institutional committees.
  • Create a climate that fosters compassionate care, innovation, engagement, and teamwork.
Clinical Informatics (15%):
  • Responsible for project management related to nursing and operational workflow enhancement, including oversight of instructional materials and trainer proficiency in EHR functionality.
  • Assures that Epic curriculum for operational, clinical support staff (RNs and CMAs), and providers reflects optimized team-based practice and optimizes efficiency.
  • Assure JIRA oversight and management.
  • Manage workflow optimization through new or enhanced build within the electronic health record.
  • Manage EHR system optimization spanning Ambulatory operations, IT support, business informatics and shared resources such as intranet and SharePoint; acts as a liaison with hospital nursing informaticists.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related discipline required.
  • 3 years’ experience in an outpatient setting.
  • Additional experience may substitute for Bachelor's Degree. Prior supervisory experience may substitute for up to two years of required nursing experience.
  • JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
Travel Requirements:
  • At least twice a month to both Howard County and Sibley clinic locations.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
  • Knowledge of EPIC and project management skills.
Supervisory Responsibility:
  • Certified Dermatology Technician float pool.
Budget Authority:
  • Collaborate with administration and finance to develop budgets; evaluate and manage human and material resource utilization; participate in cost analysis with respect to IT initiatives.
