SEIU Local 2015’s Communications Department is looking for an L.A. area Communications Coordinator who can bring strong campaign and press experience and supervise a team to develop messaging, gather member stories, develop member communications, plan campaign escalation with field staff, handle campaign press. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for a segment of the department’s operations, including strategy development and execution, timelines, plans and supervision of other Communications Department staff.
  • Build and lead great teams, including manage goals, roles, processes and relationships, relationship building, and working collaboratively across departments.
  • Ability and enthusiasm to take responsibility for and lead staff through whole communications campaigns and see each component through to a successful conclusion.
  • Excellent message development, writing and editing skills, including overarching messaging documents that guide campaigns and member communications such as e-blasts, mass texts, flyers, social media, direct mail, and web pages.
  • Strategic use of traditional and social media to advance organizing, contract bargaining and legislative campaigns. These public communications include social media ad buys, writing and distributing press releases and other media outreach, developing talking points, media event planning, producing paid media, such as print and radio ads and/or social media ads.
  • In coordination with Field, Organizing, Policy, Research, Political and Membership Departments, develop and execute communications strategies to build member power and advance campaigns.
  • Train and develop member and staff spokespeople.
  • Work with Communications Specialists and other team members to write, edit, and design one-page flyers, brochures and other literature, produce web pages, text messaging campaigns and other digital media.
  • Conceptualize, shoot and edit videos or coordinate with outside video vendors to produce campaign videos.
  • Demonstrate SEIU Local 2015 Core values: leadership, compassion, empowerment, accountability, transparency and excellence.
  • Assist and lead on event production and staging, scriptwriting, when needed.
  • Assist and lead on other communications projects as needed.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

  • Excellent visual, written and verbal communication, editing and proofreading skills.

  • Ability to frame issues for different audiences.
  • Must be able to plan, develop and handle multiple projects simultaneously, deliver on time and within budget.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite; proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite preferred; familiarity with Canva a plus; basic understanding of communications and project management tools such as Slack, Trello, and Asana; ability to be trained as needed on additional software and train other staff as needed.
  • Proficiency shooting and editing video and ability to take good quality photos strongly
    preferred.
  • Have at least 3-6 years of experience working in communications for a Union, progressive political campaign, or non-profit organization.
  • Have at least 3-6 years of experience in social and/or traditional media.
  • Must thrive in an environment with tight deadlines, high pressure and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends; ability to travel as needed.
  • Excellent ability to work closely with a team, accommodate request from team members, and assimilate input from multiple sources.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a positive, enthusiastic attitude and a commitment to contribute to a positive work environment.
  • An ability and commitment to modeling proactive leadership behavior and skills.
  • Bilingual a plus.
  • BA or higher.

Physical Requirements:

  • Willingness and ability to work long, irregular hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • All Communications Department positions are in essence field positions. While work is generally performed in an office setting, it will at times be in the field with staff, members and outside constituents.
  • Willingness and ability to travel; the position covers large geographic areas and often requires temporary assignments away from home.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Scope and Nature of Supervision:

Communications Coordinators may report to a Communications Director, Deputy Communications
Director, Communications Manager, local union officer, or other assigned supervisor.

Communications Coordinators are frequently expected to operate without day-to-day supervision,
to develop their own work plans and goals, and to act with a degree of discretion and independent
judgment. Accordingly, they must be strong self-starters and have a commitment to fulfill the
objectives of the organization.
