Salary Range: $130,500 - $145,000 annually

POSITION OVERVIEW*

HomeRise is seeking an experienced and qualified individual to serve as Controller. The Controller will report directly to the VP of Finance, and work closely with the Asset Management team and Finance Department. The successful candidate will have 5 to 10 years of running accounting and financial operations in a complex organization. The Controller overseas financial operations, accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records and preparation of financial reports in full compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and manages a department of 7 staff members on the accounting services team. The Controller is a key leadership position at HomeRise and (a) establishing policies, procedures, and controls that result in accountability and integrity in all business operations, (b) ensures compliance with the financial requirements of funding agencies, contributors, partners and investors, (c) ensures the accurate and timely reporting of financial information (d) maintains robust accounting, budgeting and reporting systems that support operational control, financial analysis and accountability, (e) ensures that proper recording and documentation of transactions meets audit standards for the industry and (f) provides exemplary service to support HomeRise’s program and operational needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*
Responsibilities included but are not limited to the following:

Manage Financial Operations_

  • Design, maintain, and improve internal control procedures ensuring that effective internal controls are in place to comply with applicable Federal, State and Local regulatory rules and legislation for Financial and Tax reporting. Oversee bank reconciliation, account analysis, month-end and year-end closings.
  • Responsible for managing and overseeing monthly accounting cycle for corporate, fiscal-year, and calendar-year properties, including all aspects of accounts payable, accounts receivable and collections; revenue, expense, and fixed asset recordation; direct and indirect cost allocation; proper account coding for revenue and expenses; balance sheet account analysis and reconciliation; and ensuring a timely close for preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Ensure that all fixed asset purchases meeting HomeRise capitalization threshold are recorded in accordance with GAAP; are tracked and managed in a suitable database in a detailed manner by location, item, and purchase date; and are appropriately depreciated/amortized according to HomeRise policy and/or GAAP.
  • Maintain current knowledge and understanding of accounting and tax regulations, laws, industry trends, practices; establish policies and procedures for compliance, including compliance with US government A-133 reporting and LIHTC (Low Income Housing Tax Credit) accounting guidelines. Provide technical accounting GAAP guidance and support to all team members.
  • Develops, implements, communicates, and maintains a comprehensive set of fiscal policies and procedures to guide financial operations and decision making, provide internal; controls, and safeguard assets across the organization.
  • Coordinate the completion of Federal and State tax reporting requirements including income, property, sales and use, payroll and other local taxes.
  • Ensure proper accounting for gifts and pledges, government grants and contracts and a variety of intra- and inter-company transactions.
  • Prepare and monitor cash flow forecasts for multiple funds and bank accounts.
  • Ensure proper and accurate importation of and recordation of payroll transactions from Human Resources

Reporting & Analysis

  • Preparation and review of monthly financial statements and related management reports required by investors. Review of monthly accounting close process including analytical review of the monthly operating results including related key performance measure reports to ensure accurate financial reporting and appropriate documentation and support of all financial entries.
  • Responsible for coordinating and preparing documentation and schedules for the annual audit of the Association's financial statements as well as coordinating the preparation and filing annual tax returns on a timely basis. Assist external auditors throughout the annual audit process and preparation of tax returns. Review audits and tax returns prepared by external accountants for multiple related entities.
  • Prepare highlights of key financial indicators for the organization’s annual report.

General

  • Provide information and technical assistance to support annual budget preparations.
  • Schedule expenditures, analyzing variances, and manage corrective actions.
  • Help guide financial decisions by monitoring and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Coordination and distribution of financial data related to due diligence.
  • Serve as financial software system administrator; provide financial management and accounting training to staff related to their responsibilities.
  • Evaluate the team for efficiency and effectiveness and provide individual feedback for professional and personal growth.
  • Enhance staff performance and well-being by coaching and counseling employees; setting expectations, monitoring, and appraising job results.

  • Schedule: Generally, Monday through Friday 9 am - 5 pm
  • Reports to: VP of Finance and/or Chief Financial Officer

QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree is required; a Master’s Degree, CPA, and/or CMA designation is highly preferred.

  • The prospective candidate must have solid Controller or Director of Finance experience, and ideally be experienced in the accounting for Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) partnerships with minimum of 5 years’ experience within an asset/property management organization specializing in Low Income Housing Tax Credit residential communities. Experience in nonprofit financial management, in particular government grants and contracts and restricted contributions is also required.
  • Thorough understanding of Low-Income Tax Credit Compliance and related accounting procedures.
  • Establish and implement short- and long-range team and departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures in conjunction with the VP of Finance.
  • Strong analytical, time management and organizational skills as well as a high level of attention to detail.
  • Proven management skills and ability to coach and develop accounting team and build relationships with diverse groups of people across the organization.
  • Comfort and competence managing multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Significant prior experience developing, communicating, and maintaining fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively: within a functional team, across departmental functions and with an executive management team.
  • Effective written and verbal communication and training skills.
  • Have passion for our mission and a strong desire to impact a dynamic nonprofit organization
  • Ability to work effectively with program staff as well as external accountants, investors and lenders.
  • Impeccable personal integrity and ability to protect confidential financial information.
  • Mastery of accounting and spreadsheet software including Yardi and accounting software conversion.
