Job Summary:
The Controller, under the direction and supervision of the Finance Director, is responsible for daily operations of the Accounting department, as well as management and oversight of the Tribe's annual independent audit and financial report and annual operating budget process.
Essential Functions:
- Provide leadership, goal setting and mentorship to assigned staff. Responsible for staffing a highly capable Accounting department and developing a culture of continuous improvement
- With the Accounting Manager oversees all functions of the Accounting department - accounts receivable, payroll, accounts payable, general ledger accounting, fixed assets, and bank reconciliations.
- Ensure integrity of data in financial systems review of account coding, reconciling balance sheet accounts, and insuring accounting estimates are reasonable.
- Constructing timely management reporting with the focus on added value commentary, benchmarking, variance analysis, forecasting.
- Work with Finance Director to support KIT leadership in achievement of goals and objectives.
- Business partner to senior and middle management in carrying out the Tribe's strategic objectives; representing KIT to external partners as required.
- Develops internal controls and assist in internal audit to mitigate risk assuring integrity of the accounting system.
- Effectively communicates best practices and policy adherence to program directors and managers.
- Budget authority for any contracts with financial implication and provides financial analyses as needed for capital investments, pricing decisions, contract negotiations and cost accounting.
- Maintains finance department Intranet site to provide management better access to reporting information.
- Manages the development and coordination of the annual operating and capital budgeting process.
- Advise management on short/long term liquidity planning through forecasting cash flow, analyzing funds available for investment.
- Manages audit preparation and the drafting of all financial statements, notes, MD&A.
- Protection of all Tribal assets and resources with both short-term and long-term planning
- Maintains professional and technical acumen through attending workshops and reviewing publications
- Protects operations by keeping information and planning confidential, only distributed to relevant parties
- Responsible for timely and accurate submission of all financial reports to external and internal sources
- Systems analysis function of accounting software reporting, performance, system back up and utilities
- Assumes other special assignments from Director of Finance and performs other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:

Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in business/accounting or related field
Experience:
- Seven years of progressive multifunctional experience in accounting
- Three years of supervisory management experience
License/Certification:
- Alaska driver's license and must pass required criminal background check.
Special Skills:
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
Preferred:
- Experience in governmental and fund accounting
- CPA license or CMA
- Healthcare finance experience and/or managerial accounting
- Knowledge and experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian people
