Description

Culp's Café is a one-of-a-kind eatery paying homage to the small soda fountains and lunch counters found throughout Dayton in the early 1900s. The core of Dayton History's mission is to educate and preserve. As a part of Dayton History, Culp's Café's primary goal is to both immerse our guests in a welcoming, entertaining, historic, and educational experience.

Basic Function:

This position exists to ensure our guests have a high-quality and enjoyable experience by providing an excellent meal prepared using recipes and menu items created by the Kitchen Supervisor, Restaurant General Manager, and Food & Beverage Director. The Cook works in conjunction with all other back of house staff to keep the kitchen running smoothly.

General Responsibilities:

  • Prepares food items according to recipes, instructions and customer orders, and follows food handling and safety requirements, including cleaning and cutting ingredients as well as cooking main dishes, appetizers, snacks, and desserts.
  • Follows specific recipes and instructions to prepare menu items using basic kitchen equipment and preparatory utensils.
  • Plates prepared foods based on Kitchen Supervisor's guidance.
  • Reads and prepares menu items as ordered by customers according to portion control and quality standards of the menu.
  • Works with front of house staff to ensure that orders are completed according to request and on time.
  • Retrieves ingredients from appropriate areas by lifting and carrying to food preparation area.
  • Communicates shortage of menu items to Kitchen Supervisor immediately.
  • Assists in unloading deliveries from truck and placing in appropriate storage areas by lifting and carrying boxes.
  • Stores incoming food shipments properly in storeroom, maintains storeroom in a neat, orderly manner and ensures all food items are stored at the appropriate temperature.
  • Assists with stocking and setting up kitchen stations.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area at all times.
  • Washes and cleans the kitchen and cooking utensils and stores equipment at the end of shifts.
  • Completes opening and closing duties in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Ensures kitchen operation procedures and hygiene meet or exceed food safety standards and regulations.
  • Reports any health and/or safety concerns/violations immediately to management.
  • Additional duties as assigned by management

Line of Communication and Accountability:

This position reports to the Kitchen Supervisor.

Qualification Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Prior restaurant cooking experience, ServSafe Person-in-Charge certification preferred
  • Outstanding communication and customer service skills
  • Strong organization and active listening skills
  • Effective team member
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task
  • Effective stress management and conflict resolution skills
  • Available for various shifts including weekends - typical shifts are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, 7 days a week
  • Full time and part time positions available. Full time applicants preferred.

  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to high temperatures and wet or humid conditions (non-weather). Occasionally, the employee works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
