Job Title: Student Outdoor Rental Attendant

Work Schedule: Varies; Holiday, Night, & Weekend Shifts May Be Required as Scheduled
The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Job Summary
Under direct supervision of the Outdoor Adventures Coordinator, the Outdoor Rental Attendant is responsible for administering the operations of the Outdoor Rental Center in Spartan Recreation. Some of these responsibilities include educating renters on proper equipment usage, inspecting returned equipment for cleanliness and damages, cleaning, repairing and maintaining equipment, and assisting in the equipment logistics for Outdoor Adventures wilderness outings.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in building an inclusive, welcoming, and fun Outdoor Rental Center community through individual interactions, programs, and activities.
- Provide excellent customer service to all patrons who visit the Outdoor Rental Center.
- Educate renters how to properly set up, use, and clean the equipment being rented.
- Assist with the cleaning, repair, maintenance and operation of all program equipment.
- Communicate effectively with all staff and patrons.
- Maintain equipment safety and maintenance logs, and keep all necessary reports and documentation in order.
- Assist in the development, facilitation, set up and take down of programs and events.
- Enforce and interpret all policies and procedures of the facility.
- Attend all regularly scheduled staff meetings, training days, and workshops.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Desire to work in Spartan Recreation and as part of a team.
- Must attend in house climbing rental program training within 3 months of hire.
- Interpret and implement proper policies and procedures for climbing area.
- Reliable, self-motivated; able to solve problems and make decisions based on SJSU mission and guiding principles.
- Ensure all equipment is used in an appropriate manner that promotes safety and is stored properly.
- Positive attitude, self-control, and demeanor in handling emergency and stressful situations.
- Must be professional, organized and detail-oriented. Ability to collaborate with other departments on multiple projects while staying focused and on task.
- Excellent customer service, ability to manage conflicts, and create an inclusive environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to quickly and effectively respond to emergencies.
- Interpret and implement proper policies and procedures for all emergencies.
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude.

- Able to lift 45 pounds safely and stand for an extended period of time.
Qualification and Specifications
- Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred. Online certifications will not be accepted.
- Must be a current matriculated SJSU student
- Reliable, self-motivated; able to solve problems and make decisions based on SJSU mission and guiding principles.
Guidelines
This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
Hourly Wage: $16.20 per hour
Additional Information:
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Student Union at SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current SU, Inc. employee who was offered the position on a contingent basis.
The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background. Some positions may also require fingerprinting. SJSU will pay all costs associated with this procedure.
All Student Union at San Jose State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
