The Civil Division of Hennepin County District Court invites qualified applicants to apply for a Court Operations Associate position. This is a diverse, professional environment that promotes equity for all court staff and court users. The Civil Division areas include:


  • Civil Filing – Handles civil lawsuits, harassment cases, name change applications, implied consent cases and more.
  • Conciliation – Also known as small claims court, handles civil cases involving claims of $15,000 or less.
  • Housing – A specialty court that handles cases involving landlord and tenant disputes.
  • Judgments – Handles entry and docketing of money and non-money judgments from judicial orders and from administrative defaults filed by plaintiffs.
This AFSCME-represented position will be assigned to Conciliation Court. Court Operations Associates in the Conciliation Division work individually and together as a team to provide excellent customer service to court users, many of whom are self-represented litigants, while using available resources to perform a variety of administrative assignments that require strong attention to detail and technological skills to match our fast-paced, high-volume, electronic environment.

The Conciliation Court Division is located on the third floor of the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 S. 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487. Core business hours are 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday; but may vary depending on business need. Staff in this position are currently working both on-site and remotely, which may change depending on assignments and/or business need. Training is done on-site.

Example of Duties

  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting and communicating with court users in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner to ensure the customer's needs are effectively met in-person, over the phone, or through electronic means.
  • Provide courtroom support by working with judicial officers and other justice partners.
  • Complete administrative work in an office and courtroom environment by performing high-level case processing, data entry, and financial transactions for conciliation court cases utilizing court technology systems to ensure the court record is accurately documented.
  • Coordinate, communicate, and collaborate on work with team members to ensure efficient and accurate case processing.
  • Process legal documents while reviewing for timeliness, statutory compliance, and proper document security as required by local and courtwide policies and procedures.
  • Provide backup to other Civil departments (Housing Court, Judgments, and Civil Filing) as needed to ensure adequate office coverage and team goals are achieved.

Typical Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience providing customer service.
  • Experience working in a clerical or administrative position (for example: bank teller, cashier, court clerk, legal assistant, medical billing specialist) OR a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • As this position will be working partially remotely after training, access to reliable internet connection is required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Effective customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to de-escalate difficult customer interactions and work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Team-oriented, with a positive attitude and the ability to establish and maintain respectful, effective relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with internal staff and the public.
  • Ability to transition from one assignment to another with ease.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure in a high volume, fast-paced work environment with excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Reliable, with the ability to meet commitments and keep work projects on task.
  • Flexible and adaptable to change, with the ability to learn and apply new material and concepts.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of legal and court systems.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office Suite, with the ability to learn other job-related software.
  • Experience with electronic document applications, workflow queues and web-based video and audio platforms.

The expected starting salary for external candidates is at least $21.00 per hour and may be higher, depending on qualifications. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and are eligible for State of Minnesota employee benefits.
