SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Crane Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient inspection, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of the Company’s marine cranes including knuckle-, lattice-, boxed-, and telescopic boom cranes for subsea, shipboard and shoreside operations, marine specialty equipment including active heave compensated offshore gangways systems, lifesaving appliances including lifeboat davits, winches and release gear. The Crane Engineer shall have knowledge of, and experience, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing cranes, heavy equipment, marine equipment and lifesaving lifting appliances with a strong aptitude and understanding of machinery systems, hydraulics, PLC-based control systems, structural and mechanical equipment and components.
SCOPE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties of the Crane Engineer shall include, but are not necessarily limited to the following:
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge, aptitude and understanding of marine cranes, systems engineering and/or heavy equipment or machinery operation. Ability to understand and interpret technical specifications, operations and maintenance manuals for marine shipboard cranes, lifting appliances and offshore gangways.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge, aptitude and understanding of mechanical systems including the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and parts diagrams.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge, aptitude and understanding of electro-hydraulic systems including the ability to read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics and utilize that information to diagnosis defects within the systems.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge, aptitude and ability to understand regulatory requirements and compliance for marine offshore cranes that includes marine classifications societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Lloyd’s Register, DNV-GL and industry specifications, standards and guidelines such as the American Petroleum Institute (API), International Standards Organization (ISO), International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) and other industry related organizations.
- Perform purchasing and material control tasks including creating, issuing and tracking purchase orders through receipt and maintaining spares inventory and tracking using the Company’s computerized management systems.
- Perform field engineering and project management tasks in support of the daily operations of the Company’s Crane Group for inspection, maintenance and repair of cranes, lifting equipment and other assets.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge, aptitude and ability to understand wire ropes including type, construction, grade and performance characteristics in addition to demonstrated knowledge of wire rope integrity management that includes wire rope maintenance, inspection, examination, testing and discard criteria.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical knowledge, aptitude and ability to understand crane and wire rope maintenance and inspections including the direct participation in the Company’s maintenance management system that consists of Pre-Use, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Annual, Quinquennial and other inspection intervals, as required, and also includes the documentation of deficiencies and corrective actions related to cranes, lifting equipment and their components. The Crane Engineer shall be responsible for the performance and successful completion of all assigned preventive maintenance tasks, repair tasks, inspections, or activities with the assistance of the vessel crew, company personnel and/or third-party contractors/inspectors that may be assigned to the task.
- Possess and demonstrate the ability to completely and accurately maintain record keeping documentation including project daily reports, inspection checklists and other associated documentation as required by the Company.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong technical and operational knowledge of lifting operations including experience and participation as a Lifting Team member in various roles and responsibilities; including lifting categories such as engineered lifts, routing and non-routine lifting plans; and including operational planning including risk assessments, hazard identification, job safety, equipment selection and personnel requirements.
- Possess, or have the ability to obtain, a Qualified Crane Inspector, Qualified Rigger, Qualified Rigging Inspector certificates and perform field inspections on the Company’s equipment and assets as a Qualified Competent Person.
- Possess the ability and aptitude to develop and maintain strong a technical knowledge and understanding of lifesaving appliances including lifeboats, rescue craft, davits, winches and release gear system as defined by IMO Resolution MSC.402(96) requirements for maintenance, thorough examination, operational testing, overhaul and repair of lifeboats and rescue boats, launching appliances and release gear.
- Ability to attend and complete third-party training as Certified Person for MSC.402(96) Lifesaving Appliances.
- Ability to understand and interpret technical specifications, operations and maintenance manuals for lifesaving appliances defined by this regulation and execute in field inspection of equipment as a Competent Person under the regulation.
- Possess the ability, qualifications and certification to travel and stay onboard offshore installations or marine vessels for temporary duty assignments.
- Possess the ability and proper documentation for international short-term travel assignments.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP
The Crane Engineer is accountable to the Crane Department Director and shall report directly to the Crane Department Project Manager. The Crane Engineer shall work closely with Vessel Officers, Operations Managers, Project Managers, Crane Technicians and any other third-party personnel as assigned or as directed by the Project Manager.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Crane Engineer shall possess the following minimum qualifications or demonstrate equivalent experience/expertise:
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a similarly related field of study is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
5-years’ experience in Crane and/or Heavy Machinery operations including inspections, maintenance, and repair activities is preferred.
SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering field, or USCG 3rd Assistant Engineer License (or greater), or Minimum of five years’ technical experience.
- Familiar with crane and lifting equipment inspections, relevant standards, rules and specifications (government regulations and international standards/codes).
- Good communication skills- written, verbal and listening.
- Negotiating skills.
- Computer literate/knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Management skills.
- Detailed product knowledge of cranes and related components.
- Familiarity with oil and gas drilling and production platforms and structures.
- Excellent command of the English language and advanced computer skills.
- Experience with NS-5 vessel maintenance system is desired.
- Ability to get along well with others.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid US Passport is required.
- Valid TWIC card is required.
- Valid State Issued Driver’s License is required.
- Valid Rigger’s Certificate, or ability to obtain via Company approved training class.
- Valid Crane Inspector Certificate, or ability to obtain via Company approved training class.
- THUET Water Safety Survival Certificate, or ability to obtain via Company approved training class.
- Must be willing to board and ride vessels to increase understanding of how this role supports our business. (This statement bay be required language when describing the role of certain shore side positions.)

HOURS OF WORK
- This is a shoreside position primarily based in Port Fourchon, Louisiana.
- The working schedule is based upon a 21/21 rotation performed at Port Fourchon, Louisiana, but may vary based upon the Company specific projects, dry dockings and vessel maintenance activities.
- Other work locations at shipyards, or other facilities, outside Port Fourchon, Louisiana may be incurred from time to time based upon Company requirements.
- Some international travel may be required.
