SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, the Cultural Arts Director is responsible for planning, developing and implementing lessons plans for the dance and theater programs and supervising the corresponding instructors. The Cultural Arts Director is also expected to be organized and prepared and must work with the Recreation Supervisor in developing new programs and providing class write-ups for the three yearly brochures.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Two years or greater from an accredited college or certified from a recognized dance/theater education program
- Two-Three years of dance teaching experience
- Two-Three years of theater teaching and directing experience
- Must be knowledgeable in the various form of dance
- Ability to enforce rules and policies
- Supervisory experience
- Excellent customer service
- Patient and enthusiastic
- Reliable and punctual
- Organized and be able to multitask
- Be able to substitute in dance classes
- Valid Driver’s License and valid car insurance
- Current First Aid, CPR/AED Certification
ESSENTIAL DANCE FUNCTIONS
- Plan, prepare and implement dance activities for youth dance classes
- Demonstrate specific dance activities and evaluate the participants to accurately gauge skill levels
- Oversees and develops Dance Company
- Plan and Implement Dance Camp
- Organize and edit all Instructor’s lesson plans
- Assist Recreation Supervisor with entering dance classes into Rec Trac and in editing the three seasonal brochure copies prior to distribution
- Organize and implement annual dance recital
- Assist Recreation Supervisor in writing, distributing and analyzing surveys
- Organize and put together dance welcome packets and handouts as needed
- Develop class outcomes for each dance class
- Ensure program activities are conducted safely and conducted to all safety guidelines.
- Assist Recreation Supervisor in planning and running quarterly meetings with dance instructors.
- Assist Recreation Supervisor in developing a dance schedule for the three annual brochures
- Assist Recreation Supervisor in hiring, developing, training, organizing, supervising and preparing written evaluations of dance instructors for specific activities for the skills that are being taught.
- Handle customer questions and complaints when Recreation Supervisor is not available
- Periodically observe dance staff to ensure they are administering and following the lesson plans and class outcomes
- Perform other duties as assigned such as planning and implementation of recitals, costumes, music, videos, pictures and other special events as determined by the Recreation Supervisor.
- Work is performed at a self-controlled pace, but may vary depending on the demands of the job required. All tasks are expected to be completed in the assigned time frame.

- Attend monthly meeting with Recreation Supervisor as scheduled
- Promote Park District programs to patrons, members, guest and staff
- Performs job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and employee policy manual.
ESSENTIAL THEATER FUNCTIONS
- Direct 3 yearly theater productions
- Cast all theater productions
- Oversee theater instructors and effectively prepare participants for all performances
- Plan and Implement Theater Camp

- Assist Recreation Supervisor in writing, distributing and analyzing surveys

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Substitute for teachers when necessary.
- Pay strict attention to housekeeping of the dance/theater areas and general facility.
- Administer primary first-aid
- Attend all staff meetings as required
- Ability to use basic computer skills
- Perform other duties as assigned
WORK HOURS
- Administrative hours are 5 hours a week. Additional administrative hours may be necessary at times and should be directed or requested at the approval of the Recreation Supervisor.
- Instructor hours are from 1-20 hours per week.
- The combined administrative and instructor hours cannot exceed 28 hours a week.
PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Must be able to perform manual labor with varying degrees of physical exertion.
- May frequently be required to walk, sit, talk and hear.
- May frequently be required to use hand and/or fingers, handle feel and reach with hands and arms.
- May frequently be required to balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
- May be in awkward or difficult positions resulting in physical fatigue.
- Must be able to lift 25 pounds

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Occasional exposure to noise distractions from music.
- Infrequent exposure to cleaning material and office supplies.
- Potential exposure to chronic infectious disease while performing routine first aid or emergency procedures.
- Director will be working indoors, in a smoke free building with controlled temperature and lighting.

Cultural Arts Director must be able to:
