GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

The Custodian works under the close supervision of the Director, performing a variety of routine and non-routine cleaning tasks using prescribed chemicals and machines to provide proper building sanitation by following prescribed cleaning practices at prescribed frequencies. The work includes trash removal and disposal, sweeping, dust mopping, high and low dusting, wet mopping, vacuuming and spot cleaning carpeting, restroom sanitation, cleaning glass, mirrors and fixtures, restocking soap dispensers and paper supplies, sanitizing drinking fountains, cleaning walls, vents and moving furniture and miscellaneous maintenance such as changing light bulbs. Interpersonal contacts are primarily within the organization requiring the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers. The work environment is indoors and outdoors where uncomfortable conditions may exist, including exposure to adverse weather conditions and/or pollutants. The work is performed mainly when spaces are occupied but can include nighttime and weekends when the spaces are unoccupied. The work requires moderate physical strain from prolonged standing, sweeping, lifting and mopping. The worker is expected to perform other job-related tasks as assigned or required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Responsible for the proper cleaning of assigned areas, care and storage of equipment and supplies;

· Responds to a variety of requests from staff which may include but are not limited to setting up for meetings, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries;

· Responds to accidents or potential safety hazards such as spills and restroom problems;

· Refinishes or restores resilient floor tile as required by mechanical stripping, sealing, scrubbing, recoating, finishing and buffing;

· Maintains carpet by machine or spot cleaning;

· Responsible for securing buildings at night and on weekends;

· Remove trash and office paper from office spaces.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

The Custodian should possess knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; the ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; exercise care and judgment using caustic chemicals and cleaning agents; the ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor; the ability to get along well with others; the ability to read; the ability to be thorough. The incumbent is required to possess a valid driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The Custodian should possess any combination of education equivalent to graduation from high school and work experience or familiarity with cleaning products and machinery, OR any acceptable combination determined to be sufficient to perform the essential functions listed above.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:

The work involves moderate physical strain requiring some strength and endurance. Cleaning and maintenance work typically requires walking and standing for long periods of time; some lifting and carrying of objects weighing 12 – 50 pounds; outdoor work includes exposure to adverse weather conditions and/or pollutants; some furniture moving; the operation of machinery and motor vehicles. Occasional exposure to hazardous substances, such as caustic chemicals and other cleaning agents is required.

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness with which the incumbent accomplishes the above responsibilities.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $15.00 per hour
