AmeriCorps Member Position Description (half-time)
DAN RIVER YEAR AMERICORPS PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Dan River Year, a program of the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR), is dedicated to addressing community needs in southern Virginia. We mobilize AmeriCorps members in a community-supported environment to build capacity in the region, strengthen community involvement, and address pressing needs. In 2022-2023, AmeriCorps members will focus on building the region’s science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and literacy capacity.

STEM/Literacy Tutor and Coach

November 2022 – August 2023
POSITION SUMMARY
Member will provide direct service to students attending Danville Public Schools. All members will receive tutor training prior to placement. Tutors will work with students one-on-one and/or in small groups for 36 hours/student during the school year. Additionally, members may also work with groups during the school year aiding in their reading or math classes. Member will also provide support with hands-on STEM activities to be used to generate an interest in STEM and deepen STEM knowledge. Hours will vary and may range from 15-25 hours/week.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create long and short term goals with the student.
- Keep records and report to Member Coordinator on a regular basis.
- Provide individualized tutoring or skill development support to youth and adults with reading and/or math literacy training. Conduct related workshops for small group settings.
- Document progress of learner’s goals through an Individual Tutor Plan (ITP) and tutor log.
- Collaborate with staff, fellow AmeriCorps members, and partner organizations to develop and support service projects in the primary areas of focus (literacy), support per-approved service projects, and increase STEM opportunities post accompaniment.
- Recruit volunteers to support identified service opportunities.
- Support out-of-school time STEM experiences and bridge programs for K-12 students. This includes program development and execution.
- Attend all planned training sessions and meetings for AmeriCorps members.
- Complete and submit accurate and timely documentation of AmeriCorps service hours as required by the Dan River Year.
- Participate in the MLK Day of Service, Day of Remembrance and Service and one additional service day.
APPLICANTS MUST:
- Be at least 18 years old on their first day of service
- Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident alien
- Have a high school diploma or high school equivalency
- Not have served more than the allowed number of AmeriCorps terms previous to this term
- Submit to a full background check, including a sex offender registry check, state criminal history registry check, and FBI fingerprint-based check. This position may have recurring access to vulnerable populations and selection is contingent upon satisfactory results of these checks.
- Dress appropriately; i.e., as a professional educator.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent mathematical skills (successful completion of at least Algebra II) OR English/Literacy skills
- Experience with education in a formal or informal setting
- Associate’s degree or higher
- Silver level National Career Readiness Certificate
- Intermediate computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office products
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Access to a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
- Experience working with young people, job seekers or adult learners
- Strong organizational skills
- Technology literate with the ability to use virtual meeting platforms and online programs
BENEFITS:
· Living allowance of $10,250 for a service term of 900 hours over 10 months
· Eligibility for Segal Education Award of at least $3,172.50 at the end of a successful term of service, which can be used to repay student loans or for current or future education.
· Mileage reimbursement for non-host site location travel
