DePaul University, one of the nation’s largest Catholic institutions of higher education, serving undergraduate and graduate students, invites applications and nominations for the Dean of the College of Education. The institution seeks a dean possessing integrity; someone who respects its Catholic, Vincentian, and urban identity, is committed to its distinctive mission and values, and seeks to champion and elevate its innovative, diverse, and pragmatic character.

Founded in 1898, it is one of the nation’s largest Catholic institutions of higher education and the largest private university in the Midwest. DePaul, a Carnegie doctoral/research-intensive institution with more than 21,000 full-time and part-time students and 866 full-time faculty members, offers more than 300 undergraduate and graduate programs.

The College of Education, with 1493 undergraduate and graduate students and 51 full-time faculty, is divided into three departments: Teacher Education; Leadership, Language and Curriculum; and Counseling and Special Education. The College offers 28 undergraduate degree programs and 40 graduate degree programs, along with numerous licensures and endorsements.

The dean’s priorities will be leading and nurturing colleagues in the effective implementation and assessment of the College’s strategic priorities within DePaul’s broadly supported vision. This will include strengthening and improving the College’s position as a leader, advocate, and partner in shaping education policy and public opinion in the Chicago Public Schools, the state, the region and internationally. The dean will promote and advocate for scholarly activities and research—empirical, conceptual, applied—and policy studies that advance research, theory, and practice in the field of education nationally and internationally. The new dean’s responsibilities will include the continued hiring of exemplary faculty; encouraging and providing support for faculty to engage in scholarship; and monitoring internal and external professional activities.

Additionally, the next dean will provide strategic leadership to further advance the College’s local, regional, national, and growing international reputation and build upon its accomplishments within the many and varied professional communities it serves. The new dean will report to the provost and serve as a member of the University’s leadership team, which has responsibility for collaborative and team-based efforts to benefit the University as a whole. The new dean must work to build a cohesive, synergistic team among the three major departments in the College that will promote the College’s ability to achieve their mission and work collaboratively with the liberal arts disciplines and other schools and colleges across the university.
