The Greater San Antonio Texas eight county region represents the diverse and growing demographic future of Texas and the U.S. greater:SATX is the regional partnership leading San Antonio’s transformative economic growth through business recruitment, business retention & expansion, and workforce development. Supported by 170 private sector investors and the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, CPS Energy, SAWS, the organization is responsible for assisting over 500 companies relocate or expand in the region that collectively employ more than 120,000 San Antonians.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Business Development – Biosciences and Technology leads and executes the greater:SATX (gSATX) Business Development/ sales pipeline development program of work for the eight-county San Antonio region with an emphasis on the biosciences and technology sectors. The Director is accountable for building an active sales pipeline, identifying and leveraging available resources and relationships to generate and connect with potential corporate location prospects, fostering and maintaining relationships with key partners and companies in these industries, and partnering across the Economic Development team, across the organization, and with external partners, industry groups, investors, and site location consultants to ensure that lead generation efforts generate active projects that result in corporate location wins.

Develop a Recruitment Pipeline, Target, Market to, and Recruit New Businesses to San Antonio:

  • Professionally and enthusiastically represent the San Antonio region domestically and internationally in all economic development efforts in a variety of forums and audiences (executives, site selectors, elected officials, etc.).
  • Lead, manage, and/or implement programs and/or methods for gSATX to effectively attract targeted new business into San Antonio and to support the retention and expansion of existing target sector companies in the region.
  • Develop relationships, identify opportunities, and suggest and enhance approaches and methods of marketing the San Antonio region to business prospects, investors, late-stage investment groups, commercial real estate brokers, and/or other economic development partners.
  • Proactively contact companies to develop prospect leads from data, advertising, electronic tools, marketing trips, and business publications; implement innovative methods of new prospect development.
  • Initiate and proactively develop and maintain relationships with global site selection consultants to ensure there is a steady stream of high-quality business projects that align with target sectors and gSATX’s regional economic development strategy.
  • Develop, inform, and/or execute on the creation of target company lists, marketing collateral and presentations, corporate targeting messaging, and marketing event activations.
  • Lead marketing campaign activations to identify and connect with target industry decision makers, including trade shows, corporate targeting trips and missions, and industry-related events.
  • Develop and carry out outbound prospect and/or consultant marketing trips aligned to targeted geographic locations and industry sectors to develop new leads and maintain relationships with corporate location advisors and decision-makers.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of general and targeted marketing materials and messaging.
  • Serve as a direct business development project lead for prospect companies; providing complete and professional technical assistance to prospects; market analysis/trends, information gathering.
  • Ensure smooth transitions and handoffs for clients when converting to an active corporate location project.
  • Partner across the team and organization to ensure business retention and expansion of major employers, strategic businesses, and those in target sectors.
  • Support organizational efforts to work with local employers on their talent pipeline needs and how they align to education and training offered throughout the MSA.
  • Serve as principal point of contact with a diverse coalition of partners, organizations, and private companies, securing their cooperation, support, and action to meet the location decision requirements of individual prospect companies.

Proactively Maintain Relationships:

  • Manage stakeholder relationships, and identify opportunities, suggest, and enhance approaches and methods of marketing San Antonio to business prospects, investors, late-stage investment groups, commercial real estate brokers, and other economic development partners.
  • Once an active project lead is established, partner with team to manage assigned prospects through to a final location decision.
  • Partner with the economic development team to ensure effective collaboration and points of transition for companies once a location project is established. This may include transitions for project management (including site visits, data and insights, real estate, incentives, and local connections that result in the establishment of new or expanding operations in San Antonio) and for business retention and expansion of local businesses.
  • Connect with a diverse coalition of partners, real estate firms, organizations, or private companies to secure cooperation, support, and action to meet the location decision requirements of prospect companies.
  • Serve as a liaison to employers and key industry associations to understand and convey workforce development and business recruitment needs.
  • Effectively communicate the value proposition of gSATX, not only in business recruitment services, but also in workforce development and continued engagement via investment and active participation.
  • Uphold the organizational standards of communication and conduct to positively reflect the community for the long-term benefit of both the community and company.
  • Provide proactive and timely follow-up and ongoing client, partner, and stakeholder engagement.

  • Responsible for achieving assigned metrics per the strategic and annual planning processes.
  • Inform the development of an annual program of work and an aligned budget and tactical business development plan in line with the organizational goals and objectives.
  • Inform lead generation strategies and tactics to drive demand and growth across San Antonio’s regional economy and real estate sectors.
  • Utilize the sales development and process framework, including Salesforce, to ensure transparency and accountability into prospecting activities.
  • Creatively deploy resources in alignment with gSATX’s regional economic development strategy to attract high-quality prospects to one of the country’s most vibrant and rapidly growing economies.
  • Ensure proactivity, transparency, and collaboration across the team and organization to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrate integrity and trustworthiness in all decision-making and substantiate a deep understanding of the responsibility entrusted to gSATX and each team member by gSATX investors and partners to be trustworthy stewards their resources.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding that trust is earned with every action or inaction taken on behalf of gSATX partners and that gSATX must earn the trust of each partner.
  • Identify and champion opportunities for collaboration across the team, the organization, and with external stakeholders to create opportunity to for San Antonio employers and workforce.

  • Remain abreast of local, national, and international events and trends (including economic development issues and target industry trends) that affect gSATX and its goals.
  • Participate in meetings of economic development professional associations, chambers of commerce, municipal councils, or other economic development related committees, as assigned by the Senior Vice President, Business Development.
  • Represent gSATX and promote organizational objectives at official functions.
  • Jump in enthusiastically to support the team in other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration, Economic Development, Planning, or related field required.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of related experience in sales or business development
  • Experience in business development, preferred
  • Experience in economic development, preferred

Computer Skills: MS Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook). Salesforce CRM experience preferred.

Certificates & Licenses: None required

Other Requirements: Assist and/or participate in travel up to 50% of time. Valid Texas driver license and passport.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This is a flexible work environment which includes both in-office attendance and the ability to work from home as business needs allow. Work is performed primarily indoors and sedentary. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, and multi-functioning printer. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business-related events as needed. After hours work/travel may be required for business-related events.
