We're looking for a Director of Regional HR & Labor Relations who is a collaborative leader, has led all aspects of plant HR and has demonstrated experience driving culture and behavior change within a unionized, tenured workforce. The ideal candidate will be an influential business partner who is able to build trusting and authentic relationships with union and non-union work groups, including all levels of plant and corporate leadership. This role will report to the Vice President, Human Resources and will directly manage all plant HR Managers & HR team members and is accountable for leading employee and labor relations across a 500+ network of employees located in four US manufacturing facilities. The ideal candidate will be located in the Northwest PA or Southwest MI region, with a plant-based office location.

The Director of Regional Human Resources & Labor Relations can be based out of the following locations:

  • North East, PA (Erie area)
  • Lawton, MI
  • Concord, MA

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Labor Relations:

  • Optimize operational effectiveness by developing, standardizing and implementing contemporary, best in class HR practices, policies and operating procedures across manufacturing network.
  • Develop and execute relationship and interest-based labor strategies. Lead union collaboration and education efforts to drive business partnership and a collaborative labor-management foundation.
  • Manage and oversee resolution of all grievance and arbitration proceedings at designated locations. Monitor trends to proactively identify gaps and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Working across the plant, HR and Supply Chain leadership, develop bargaining priorities, scenarios and strategies in preparation for union contract negotiations. Serves as Welch's lead negotiator for designated union contract negotiations.
  • Provides guidance and direction to plant leadership and HR team members on all matters related to collective bargaining, contract interpretation, past practice, mediation, and unfair labor practice charges.

Business Partner:

  • Be an authentic advocate for employees, proactively working to build a culture where employees feel like they can use their voice and belong.
  • Partner with and influence plant leadership to align and embed people and culture goals within the manufacturing network affecting both how we lead ourselves and how we work together. This includes organizational design, change leadership, coaching and development, and employee engagement.
  • Manage Welch's performance management processes, including goal setting, development, feedback, and compensation across manufacturing network.
  • Ensure consistent application of behavioral expectations, investigatory processes, and both formal and informal coaching opportunities across all plants.
  • Lead and facilitate talent reviews for manufacturing talent and succession planning for key roles.

People Management:

  • Authentically lead team of HR professionals, aligning people and business priorities, across manufacturing network.
  • Visibly role model the behaviors for How We Work and How We Lead setting an example within the manufacturing network.
  • Hold plant leaders at all levels accountable to Welch's leadership model using coaching and candor to effect changes.
  • Design and implement plant HR competency model in collaboration with corporate team.
  • Regularly engage in development conversations with plant HR team for continued progression and development.

Talent Acquisition:

  • Partners with Corporate Talent Acquisition team to develop and implement plant recruiting strategies. Works with plant leadership to attract and retain diverse, top talent, while meeting established recruitment KPIs.
  • Develops and manages hourly staffing models to ensure target headcount and training plans are aligned to meet the needs of each manufacturing location.
  • Works with internal production planning team and external temporary employment agencies to manage fluctuating production volume and build seasonal/harvest staffing plans.

Health & Safety:

  • Partners with plant leadership, legal and corporate benefits team to manage absence and leave programs across plant network. Advises local HR teams on best practices for ensuring compliance with applicable ADA, ADAAA and/or FMLA policies, regulations and laws.
  • Works with plant leadership/HR teams and corporate safety manager to develop effective safety committees, reward systems and training programs. Shares responsibility for safety performance with plant management teams.
  • Works closely with plant and corporate safety teams to effectively manage worker's compensation claims. Partners with risk management and external advisors to manage return to work and settlement strategies.

WHO YOU ARE:

  • Functional HR generalist expertise; in the areas of employee and labor relations, talent acquisition, training and development, performance management, and employment laws
  • Labor expert and has negotiated difficult contracts with tenured unions
  • Works urgently with exceptional project and time management skills; proven record of effectively prioritizing and executing work responsibilities
  • Makes recommendations and decisions while considering short and long term implications across the total enterprise
  • Ability to lead and influence all levels in the organization across corporate and plant work groups, even without direct supervisory authority
  • Strong listening, relationship building and collaboration skills; models transparency and accountability
  • Communicates key messages directly and concisely through verbal and written methods
  • Continuously questions the status quo and seeks ways to improve and develop
  • Comfortably and skillfully challenges points of view; uses radical candor

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • BA/BS degree required
  • Minimum 10+ years of related human resources experience
  • Experience working in a manufacturing facility required
  • Experience working in a union environment required
  • Must be willing to travel 25% - 50%
