Highline College seeks a dynamic and energetic individual to fill the position of the Director of Counseling in Student Services. The position reports to the Vice President for Student Services (VPSS) and is responsible for providing leadership and supervision of the Counseling Center.

The Director is a member of the Student Services Administrative Cabinet and Leadership Team and participates in setting strategic direction, anticipating, and responding to opportunities and challenges, managing resources, formulating policy and developing key relationships with academic and administrative colleagues to further the mission and goals of the College.

This administrative position serves as the liaison to Academic Affairs and works in collaboration with the Division Chair for the Health, PE and Education Division.

This position is an exempt, at-will, full-time position. Hours of work may include evening, weekend and occasional travel.

Essential Tasks
Reporting to the Director of Advising, this position will:

Develop, implement, evaluate and maintain a comprehensive program of counseling services that includes, but may not be limited to personal, educational and career counseling;

  • Provide leadership for the counseling staff, including but not limited to faculty, staff and graduate interns;
  • Supervise the department Program Coordinator and support the front desk operations;
  • Build a collaborative team; ensure appropriate staff training, coaching and assignment of responsibilities;
  • Conduct educational workshops, presentations, and other campus outreach services; make referrals to campus resources as needed;
  • Collaborate with members of the campus community to ensure safety of the campus community;
  • Participate in student services planning and program development;
  • Remain current on resources and referral partnership opportunities within the community;
  • Serve as a member of college-wide and state-wide committees and task forces;
  • Coordinate campus outreach (class visits, psychoeducational workshops, trainings);
  • Manage department budget and assessments;
  • Direct the daily operations of the department.

Clinical Leadership Responsibilities

  • Provide consultation with faculty and staff on student behavioral concerns, classroom management to promote students’ development and academic success;
  • Perform initial client evaluations and provide appropriate intervention, mediation, and follow-up;
  • Triage and coordinate response to psychological emergencies with CARE and Public Safety;
  • Serve on CARE Core Team by providing consultation and coordinating counseling department response and follow-up to all mental health related reports;
  • Provide clinical trainings to faculty and staff on how to respond to students in distress;
  • Coordinate clinical trainings for counseling department faculty and staff;
  • Respond to faculty concerns of students and all psychological emergency situations;
  • Consult with Counseling Faculty when a voluntary or involuntary commitment needs to occur due to suicidality risk, or when a student is reported to CPS;
  • Supervise Counseling Faculty’s clinical work when their current license does not allow them to practice independently;
  • Facilitate weekly Clinical Case Consultations with Faculty Counselors;
  • Serve as liaison to Student Housing, Access Services, and Veterans;
  • Coordinate with HR to refer staff and faculty to EAP counseling services;
  • Assist VP/Dean with student death protocol and coordinating response with campus community;
  • Manage clinical records retention of counseling and psychotherapy files per state law;
  • Respond to signed releases and requests for medical information.

  • Student development theory, educational, career, intervention and support services;
  • Current issues and best practices in student and academic affairs;
  • Ethical standards of professional behavior as defined in the code of ethics of the American Psychological Association, and the American Counseling Association;
  • Strong interpersonal and cultural competency skills;
  • Demonstrated experience leading organizational change and renewal, developing and mentoring staff and cross-functional teams, promoting diversity and inclusion, and advancing a culture of collaboration with all segments of the campus community;
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of the community college.

Qualifications

MINIMUM:

  • Master's degree in counseling, clinical psychology, social work or a related field; AND
  • Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Psychologist, or license eligible in Washington State; AND
  • Three years of administrative, supervisory and practitioner experience.

DESIRED:

  • Ph.D. in Counseling, Clinical Psychology or related field;
  • Experience working in a higher education setting;
  • Experience providing bilingual counseling services;
  • Experience in program review and accreditation processes;
  • Experience in a shared governance model;
  • Experience in student conduct in higher education.
