GENERAL PURPOSE

The Director of Manufacturing will provide leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of product and process improvements for optimal and efficient operation of new and existing products and processes for optical, mechanical, and electrical assembly manufacturing. Director of Manufacturing is responsible for overseeing the production of existing products and is involved in the development of new products, managing inventory levels, and ensuring that all manufacturing processes are carried out according to plan. The Director monitors and oversees staffing, scheduling, and training for production as well as evaluating and guiding workflow, assembly methodology and continually improving the manufacturing process. The Director ensures that manufacturing performance, documentation requirements and quality goals are met. The Director creates manufacturing strategies and objectives along with budgets, policies, and procedures to support the manufacturing capabilities of the Organization.

The Manufacturing Director must have a strong understanding of the production of electro-optical and opto- mechanical devices in order to provide guidance in the continual development of safe manufacturing processes for new and existing products. The Manufacturing Director will be expected to define areas where improvements can be made to increase the efficiency of processes and the quality of manufactured devices. The Director must have a firm understanding of manufacturing documentation, process flow, tooling, people management, data collection and analyzing, and manufacturing equipment.

This position may require the ability to obtain a US DOD Security Clearance, for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides clear strong leadership on future direction. Helps to establish organizational policies in a major segment of the company
  • Drives transition from Engineering to Manufacturing Engineering, providing support for new processes
  • Designs and implements new manufacturing processes and procedures to improve efficiency and reduce costs
  • Estimates the time and cost needed to complete projects or milestones, and adjusting them as needed
  • Develops and implements strategies to improve product design and functionality and identifying cost savings in the manufacturing process
  • Manages staffing and trains employees in order to develop a team that supports company goals in an efficient manner
  • Understands and supports the inspection process of products to ensure they meet quality standards
  • Defines and supports the transition of Research and Development devices through the development process to a manufacturable product
  • Supports life cycle maintenance for all production products
  • Monitors the performance of all operations within the department to identify opportunities for improvement and increased efficiency
  • Responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and execution of all phases of operations in a manufacturing facility
  • Develops plans and oversees all aspects of production including equipment purchases, staffing needs, work schedules, and material requirements
  • Creates reports about production activities, such as work orders and inventory levels, and updating them regularly

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports Manufacturing Readiness Assessments as required by customers
  • Promotes the manufacturability of hardware into the design process
  • Ensures planning and execution of projects to achieve corporate annual budget
  • Monitors and oversees manufacturing documentation throughout the manufacturing processes
  • Communicates with peers, management, and staff in order to ensure a complete understanding and alignment of the manufacturing goals and processes throughout the organization
  • Performs work without appreciable direction while providing leadership on future manufacturing direction and continually improving organizational policies in the manufacturing area of the organization
  • Successfully adheres to a departmental budget
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY DUTIES

  • Manages a staff consisting of a broad spectrum of manufacturing personnel including but not limited to Electronics Technicians, Manufacturing Supervisors, Manufacturing Engineers and Machinists
  • Mentors and guides staff to meet/exceed performance expectations and defined objectives, providing leadership to staff ensuring the prioritization of strategic and department level initiatives to include defining performance goals and targets, conducting performance reviews, and staff 1:1s
  • Challenges others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model
  • Manages staff – conducts interviews and is responsible for hiring and training new staff
  • Requires excellent managerial skills as well as technical skills and or background
  • Makes independent decisions and is strong in leading and managing staff
  • Collaborates with multiple departments
  • Holds team accountable through metrics

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY

  • Demonstrates knowledge of establishing milestones and implementation (execution skills) while meeting commitments, prioritizing, scheduling, planning, anticipating obstacles, and managing risk
  • Possesses a functional knowledge of the intricacies of EMD and production in an aerospace development environment
  • Solid leadership and management skills, including conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated exemplary communication skills within the organization and as the primary customer point of contact
  • Solid understanding of all aspects of engineering design from concept to production phases
  • Knowledge of electro-optics and opto-mechanical design techniques; experience with laser radar is desired
  • Knowledge of high precision manufacturing (tolerancing and techniques) in the areas of mechanical engineering desired
  • Experience working with Epicor, or related ERP system
  • Proficient using MS Office
  • Windchill experience desired
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Proficient in formal and informal discussions at all levels of the business, customer, and supplier organizations.
  • Maintains a professional presence in all business settings
  • This position may require the ability to obtain a US DOD Security Clearance, for which the US Government requires US Citizenship

EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or related field from an accredited institution
  • Master of Business Administration or Master of Science in Engineering degree desired
  • Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification desired

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 20 years previous experience in manufacturing, project management, process development and/or process engineering
  • Experience in an aerospace environment with AS9100 knowledge

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Manufacturing facility producing opto-mechanical and opto-electrical devices with office space

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

  • Walking, moving objects under 45 lbs., attending meetings lasting up to several hours, and sitting at a desk for extended periods of time

Pay: $120,000.00 - $175,000.00 per year
