DESCRIPTION

Mendocino College is seeking a full-time, tenured program director (50%) Instructor (50%) to join the Physical Therapist Assistant Department. This full-time PTA instructor position reports to the Dean of Career Education and Assistant Dean of Health Careers.

As Program Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for accreditation and maintaining the program according to Commission of Physical Therapist Education (CAPTE). These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student retention goals, directing and participating in educational planning, program organization, development, and participating in training of faculty, evaluating program faculty and student performance, motivating and advising students and participating in developing and maintaining the program budget.

The successful candidate will teach courses from the Physical Therapist Assistant curriculum which may include Physical Therapy Practice for the PTA, Pathology, Clinical Kinesiology, Patient Care Skills, Therapeutic Exercise, Therapeutic Agents, Orthopedic Management, Neurology and Development, Neurologic Management, Advanced Procedures, and Professional Integration. Courses are assigned to instructors based upon contemporary expertise in the subject matter.

This full-time, tenured position offers an 11 month contract (193 days). The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the two. The annual work year includes 182 instructional/director days and eleven (11) professional development/flex days. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers.

SALARY AND COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation is dependent on education and experience. Annual salary offered at $72,207 - $103,593. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective the first of the month following hire date. Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn eleven (11) days of sick leave per year. Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

The successful candidate will support student success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:

Teaching
  • Instructs in a full range of courses which may include practice ethics, the CA physical therapy practice act, pathology, kinesiology, patient care skills, therapeutic exercise, therapeutic agents, orthopedics, and neurology
  • Educates in varied environments including online (using Canvas), in person laboratory classes, and open laboratory sessions
  • Maintains contemporary expertise with current practice and professional development
  • Coordinates meetings with students to promote student success
  • Conducts classes and finals as included in the schedule of classes
  • Prepares material, student activities, and assignments for laboratory or online courses
  • Instructs during class hours and is present for assigned open lab hours
  • Evaluates student performance based on quizzes, comprehensive examinations, finals and/or other assignments appropriate to the course outline
  • Teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes
  • Prepares a syllabus for each course and posts it in Canvas with the associated courses
  • Posts and maintains student contact hours
  • Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and teaching practices
  • Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports

Department
  • Coordinates department core and faculty meetings
  • Participates in program development and revision
  • Participates in curriculum development, review, modification, and deletion
  • Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations
  • Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline.

Institution
  • Reports on-time for meetings, and is fully prepared; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled
  • Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees
  • May supervise student workers in the discipline
  • Participates in the processes of shared governance
  • Secures and properly stores equipment assigned to discipline
  • Conducts a periodic inventory of equipment
  • Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools

Program Duties
  • Implements and reviews annual program goals; determines and established program processes and procedures
  • Coordinate instructional staff to assure instruction is provided which follows approved curriculum and achieves program objectives and outcomes.
  • Participate in generating necessary reports including, but not limited to, Compliance Reports, Application for Approval of Substantive Change (AASC) Requests, Annual Accreditation repost, self-study reports, and reaccreditation reports
  • Participate in any and all on-site visits deemed necessary by CAPTE
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with all clinical affiliates
  • Participate in advisory committee meetings
  • Provides effective leadership for the program, including but not limited to, responsibility for communication, program assessment and planning, fiscal management, and faculty evaluation

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Office and laboratory classroom. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, online instruction, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers and various clinical sites. Physical demands include sitting, standing, bending, walking, and occasional light lifting (up to 50 lbs).

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree
  • Currently licensed as a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant through the Physical Therapy Board of California
  • Meets CAPTE Requirements for Program Director as defined here (Download PDF reader)(see 4G)
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Minimum of five years (or equivalent), full-time, post licensure experience that includes a minimum of three years (or equivalent) of full-time clinical experience.
  • Didactic and/or clinical teaching experience.
  • Experience in administration/management.
  • Experience in educational theory and methodology, instructional design, student evaluation and outcome assessment, including the equivalent of nine credits of coursework in educational foundations.

OTHER REQUIRED OR /PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Familiar with CAPTE Rules of Practice and Procedure (preferred).
  • Experience teaching in a CAPTE approved PTA program (preferred).
  • Be a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) (preferred).
  • Have strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and advising skills.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Physical therapy research, evidence-based practice, online teaching, clinical instruction; critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making related to the practice of physical therapy.

ABILITY TO:
  • Effectively instruct assigned courses using a variety of techniques, including on-ground and online teaching with Canvas;
  • Evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; update course materials to reflect current physical therapy practice;
  • Assess student academic progress; communicate effectively with students and hospital staff regarding student expectations, course requirements, evaluation procedures and other program requirements;
  • Stay current in the subject areas taught through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities;
  • Evaluate faculty;
  • Maintain records;
  • Prepare reports;
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others; demonstrate respect for the rights and needs of students; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
