Clinical Programs
Adult Congenital Heart Disease - Management of these patients occurs in partnership between the University of Colorado Hospital and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Its physicians include specialists trained in adult and pediatric cardiology, pediatric heart surgeons, and electrophysiologists with similarly advanced training in complex anatomy.
Advanced Heart Failure, LVAD & Transplant Program - This program is the only one in Colorado where heart transplantations and placement of durable left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are performed. While providing state-of-the-art treatments for people with heart failure, the program is also widely known for its expertise in clinical, genetics, basic, translational, and outcomes research. It offers a subspecialty fellowship in advanced heart failure training. It is consistently in the top 20 heart transplant centers in the country. Patients are cared for on the Anschutz Medical Campus in the Heart and Vascular Center, the Transplant Center, and on an inpatient hospital service dedicated exclusively to patients with advanced heart failure, mechanical cardiac-assist devices, and cardiac transplantation.
Cardiac Electrophysiology - The University of Colorado’s arrhythmias research program related to sarcoidosis is internationally recognized. The section is the largest and only academic group in the region, taking on the most challenging cases, with our faculty utilizing the latest advancements in treating arrhythmia.
Cardiac Imaging - The University of Colorado offers a full complement of cardiac imaging modalities, including a high-volume echocardiography lab, structural intervention guidance, cardiac MRI, cardiac CT, and nuclear. With a recent $5 Million gift, it established the Cardiac Imaging Programmatic Fund, which will provide valuable resources for leaders to advance cardiac imaging techniques and improve student educational opportunities.
General Cardiology - Provides consultative support for primary care providers who are trying to manage individuals with complex multi-system diseases, second opinions for those with issues that are not straightforward, and ongoing cardiac care for patients who require the dedicated involvement of a sub-specialist.
Interventional Cardiology - The UCHealth Structural Heart and Valve Clinic features the region’s largest volumes for advanced interventional treatments for heart valve disease, with outcomes better than national averages. The Vascular Medicine and Interventional program within the Division of Cardiology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is highly involved in caring for patients with a broad spectrum of non-coronary vascular diseases.
Research
The Division of Cardiology is at the forefront of innovation. A major focus is on understanding the molecular underpinnings of diseases of the heart, with the ultimate goal of translating these findings into innovative new therapies. Members of the Division have created an integrated research effort, driven by basic and clinician scientists, to uncover the signaling, metabolic, inflammatory, mechanical, and gene regulatory mechanisms that contribute to acquired and genetic forms of heart diseases in adults and pediatric patients. This work relies on the use of traditional rodent models but also takes advantage of our large human heart tissue banks and our expertise in human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC), CRISPR, OMICs, and myofibril mechanics technologies.
Education
Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship - The clinical experience includes not only engagement with a diverse and complex patient population but also exposure to cutting-edge tertiary and quaternary cardiac care, including advanced heart failure and transplantation, adult congenital heart disease, complex structural and peripheral vascular interventions, contemporary electrophysiology, and advanced imaging modalities.
Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship - Children’s Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital, in conjunction with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, offer two funded positions for an ACGME accredited 24-month training program dedicated to the care of Adults with Congenital Heart disease.
Advanced Heart Failure Fellowship - A one-year ACGME-accredited program with a complement of one annually.
Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship - This Fellowship is a two-year ACGME-accredited program with a complement of two annually.
Interventional Cardiology Fellowship - UCH sponsors this training program in Interventional Cardiology and offers two positions per year. This program is a joint program at UCH and the Denver VA Medical Center.
Vascular Medicine Fellowship - A one-year training experience with diverse clinical and research opportunities and graduating fellows will be eligible for the American Board of Vascular Medicine and the Registered Physician Vascular Interpretation certification examinations.
