JOB TITLE: Drug Screening Technician
EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT/CONTRACTOR: Contract, PRN
SUPERVISOR’S TITLE: Program Director
WORK SCHEDULE: To be determined. Will vary based on incoming referrals.
SUMMARY:
Upward Progression is currently seeking self-motivated individuals to join our community-based team as a Drug Screening Technician. Drug Screening Technicians are responsible for collecting hair, oral, sweat, and urine specimens from prospective drug screen donors within the community or a similar setting. Other settings include facilities and consumer dwellings. Responsible for inputting of drug screening results into the electronic tracking system. Technicians are also responsible for processing instant tests and/or preparing specimens for transport to the laboratory for testing via courier service or overnight delivery, as required. Using cultural competency and strength-based communication, technicians will build partnerships with families and providers to address safety concerns and build an environment conducive to the well-being of children.
Please note: This position does not encompass venipuncture of the collection of blood.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following: Other duties may be assigned.
- Proficiently and accurately record and process specimens.
- Ensure all relevant information is accurate.
- Ensure all tests ordered are completed accurately, while following collection protocols and procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe work collection environment, in compliance with industry protocols.
- Has the ability to build trust and rapport with Applicants, must be culturally competent, and be able to communicate in an appropriate manner.
- Demonstrates good critical thinking capability, able to think critically about information disclosed by applicant.
- Obtains and increases professional and technical knowledge (and skills) by attending trainings, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks related to workplace competence.
- Displays functional interpersonal skills with co-workers, contractors, volunteers, parents, and others, by communicating in a clear and direct manner when relaying information. Must be able to assist in resolving misunderstandings and/or conflicts, which may occur.
- Writes in a clear, easily understood style, using proper grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. Focuses on and follows Instructions easily.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS includes the following:
- Should be highly motivated and self-disciplined.
- Ability to apply the concepts of customer service and case management in the workplace. Ability to use good professional judgment. Detail oriented. Ability to work independently, with minimal direct supervision.
- Possesses a basic knowledge of all office equipment, including word processors, scanners, fax, and copy machines, and a willingness to attend appropriate classes to increase knowledge as needed.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with consumers, families, service providers and colleagues.
- Basic knowledge of general policies and procedures and community mental health resources is a plus.
- Proficient verbal and written communications skills.
- Must complete 20 hours of training annually. Information on approved trainings will be provided.
COMPUTER: Individuals must have experience in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Should possess own basic office equipment, to include but not limited to a computer, printer, and scanner. Must have access to reliable internet connection.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a contractor to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Specific vision requirements include close vision for use of computer and reading printed and/or electronic material. The noise level in this environment is usually minimal to moderate.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment described here is representative of those that must be met by a contractor to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is performed in an office or other environmentally controlled room. Other work is performed in the client’s home and/or community. Some assignments, including basic administrative duties, can be completed at the contractors’ home or similar virtual location, where basic office equipment is accessible. Starting pay of $10.00 per client served. Hours vary based on the needs of the business.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
- Bachelor’s Degree in related human services and/or at least 3-years child welfare/social services, psychology, criminal justice, sociology, human services, drug testing, occupational health, or similar human services experience. DOT collection experience is a plus.
