Job Description
Provide a safe, nurturing, and developmental appropriate classroom learning environment in order to support the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of enrolled children so that they can be prepared for success in kindergarten and beyond. Lead teachers will also provide appropriate role modeling, guidance, and mentoring of parents of enrolled children.
Under general direction of the site supervisor/manager, this position is directly responsible for the care and education of children enrolled in her/her assigned classroom. This position requires an understanding and appreciation of the issues of low-income families, being non-discriminatory in feelings and attitudes and with a willingness to welcome parents in the classroom. The incumbent works with parents and children and has the primary responsibility for the daily operations of the educational program, which includes but is not limited to, setting up classroom materials, clean-up, curriculum planning and presentation, the keeping of require records, and participation in requested trainings, and other duties as assigned. This position requires strong written and oral communication skills with co workers, parents, and children, and has responsibility to meet compliance for all licensing WACs, ECEAP Performance Standards and contract requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Arrives on time and is prepared for the day;
- Ensure safety of all children by providing a proactive, healthy, and safe environment;
- Provide positive, welcoming, and safe environment for parents, children, and staff, including ECE students;
- Maintain appropriate supervision and child to staff ratios as expected by Licensing and Program Standards;
- Aware of the activities of the entire group of children at all times, even when dealing with a smaller group of children or an individual child;
- Ensure safety of all children by providing a proactive, healthy, and safe environment;
- Administer first aid, handle emergency situations, and attend to medical/dental emergencies with a calm and professional demeanor;
- Practice ongoing health and safety procedures for indoor and outdoor environments;
- Maintains accurate attendance, health, and development records on children;
- Is able to build positive relationships with children and families.

- Manages challenging behaviors;
- Meets the developmental needs of all children and supports their local, emotional, physical, language, and cognitive development; and
- Provides meaningful learning opportunities in all curriculum content areas; implementation of Creative Curriculum or other curriculum as required by program and contract.
- Conducts assessments that consider all aspects of children’s development and are sensitive to family backgrounds and children’s special needs; meeting contract timelines in TS Gold; maintains interrater reliability in TS Gold;
- Uses assessment information to adapt curriculum, individualize teaching, and inform program development;
- Designs an enriched learning environment that stimulates learning and provides easy and frequent access to learning materials and experiences;
- Creates a caring community for learning in which teachers use their knowledge of children’s home and classroom lives to inform their teaching and ensure that children are protected from bias and discrimination;
- Build positive relationships with children, showing empathy, interest, and respect;
- Use positive approaches to help children engage constructively, encouraging independence in children as they are ready;
- Help children build social emotional skills by recognizing challenging feelings, comforting, identifying, reflecting, and helping children to solve their problems as needed;
- Uses time, grouping, and routines to achieve learning goals;
- Modifies the environment, teaching approaches, learning opportunities, and scheduling to respond to the interests and needs of children;
- Makes learning meaningful for all children by knowing what children know and what they want to learn, their family and cultural needs, and community values;
- Demonstrates continuous improvement and efforts for quality education and environment as expected using the Early Achiever Framework, ECERS and CLASS tools through coaching and training;
- Uses instruction to deepen children's understanding as well as build their skills and knowledge by using a broad range of approaches and diverse teaching· strategies;
- Participates in quarterly Child Record Reviews with the purpose of: reviewing child data including TS Gold Checkpoints, previous and current goals, and potential delays; reviewing child file contents, documentation, and conference activities; and following up as required in a timely manner.
- Completes and submits weekly lesson plans by the working day before class that includes: Creative Curriculum study area and associated activities; modifications to any classroom areas; documented individualization of activities for children based on child goals and existing IEPs; emergent activities in addition to Creative Curriculum; indication of Intentional Teaching Cards and Mighty Minute card numbers used; and all associated classroom preparation required. Weekly lesson plans must be submitted on the Teaching Strategies website unless a written plan is in place with the program manager.
- Visibly posts weekly lesson plans in the classroom that include activities and indications of individualization for classroom children, and communicates activities and requirements to classroom team in advance.
- Supervises, advises, mentors, and directs work of ECPS 1 & 2 (assistant teachers), ECE students, volunteers and student workers regarding program, parents, and children's concerns;
- Works with Family Support to provide families with community resource referrals based on information shared by parents/guardians;
- Demonstrates program goals, core values, and standards to staff, parents, children, and the public;
- Demonstrate ability to work well with a variety of people and diverse values;
- Aware of own cultural values and biases;
- Knowledge/understanding of Microsoft Office Software, especially Word, Excel, Outlook and the Internet.
- Supports community outreach by participating in designated community events, which may involve evening and/or weekend time;
- Acts as reporting agent regarding issues of child abuse and neglect;
- Complies with program standards by showing documentation or obtain upon hiring: a recent negative TB test or proof of immunity; proof of MMR, current Infant/Child CPR and First Aid cards; a current Food Handler's Permit; and AIDS/HIV Bloodborne Pathogens training, Families Experiencing Homelessness, Mandated Reporting, DCYF Portable Background check and fingerprinting, Complete the 30 hours Basics training or equivalent within 90 days of hire;
- Complete a minimum of 20 hours of professional development per year, such as workshops, classes, or job embedded professional learning
- Working hours/schedule and classroom assigned may be subject to change due to program needs by Program Manager;
- Participate in team meetings, center staff meeting and program training as identified by management;
- Support the Early Learning Programs community outreach by participating in designated community events, which may involve evening and/or weekend time;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
AA degree with ECE state certificate (and/or participate in a Professional Development Plan to obtain required certificate education within 5 years of hire date)
AND
Two years of experience working in a group setting with children of the ages enrolled in the program
OR
Equivalent education/experience.
Preferred Qualifications
BA in Early Childhood Education or related field with at least 30 ECE credits
Bilingual especially in Spanish and English
Demonstrated ability to work well with other people with diverse backgrounds and value inclusion
Awareness of own cultural values and biases
Physical Requirements
Ability to:
- Lift up to 50 pounds
- Bend, lift, and sit at child’s level for extended periods of time
Conditions of Employment
There is one 40 hours per week, 9.5-month cyclic position. Continuance of this position is dependent upon grant funding.

COMPENSATION
Monthly Salary: Range 42 ($3,401 - $4,425)
