The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Electrical Signal Technician/Transportation Systems Technician B-D (TST B-D) to perform skilled, senior-level electrical and electronic work on multiple types of electrical systems. This region wide position will conduct diagnoses, preventative maintenance, repair, and installation of Traffic Signals, Ramp Meters, Highway Lighting Systems, Electrical Services, and other related electrical systems within the Olympic Region. The TST B-D will operate a wide variety of electrical tools and equipment regularly performing electrical maintenance and repair in a safe and workmanlike manner. The maintenance and repair of highway electrical infrastructure is critical to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce. This position may be assigned lead duties.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Electrical Signal Technician will:
Perform senior-level preventative maintenance (PM), repairs, and installation.- Test voltages, electrical connections, and grounding; test and monitor pedestrian heads and pushbuttons for proper orientation and operation.
- Check signal, flashing beacon, and ramp meter operation and displays; check and monitor vehicle detection system; and check and monitor signal emergency preemption operations.
- Diagnose electrical problems.
- Repair third-party damages, check for damages, make the scene electrically safe, make appropriate repairs, and remove damaged equipment from the travelled roadway; collect, document, and enter all information.
- Maintain accurate records and account for electrical service inventories in assigned area.
- Train and instruct personnel in in safe and efficient operation of equipment, safety, maintenance procedures and best practices, and other topics related to the maintenance and repair of highway electrical infrastructure.
- Utilize and operate Class “B” CDL vehicles and other electrical construction equipment and vehicles for the maintenance of signal and luminaires at heights up to 100 feet.
Duties are often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Duties also performed at elevated heights of up to 100 feet in, around, and over live traffic and heights of up to 600 feet above water.
Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40-hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Must be able to report in service to assigned duty station within 80 minutes of an after-hours call, and work alternate and emergency shifts as assigned. On a rotational basis carry the stand-by pager for one week at a time to provide coverage 24/7 for after-hours call outs.
Qualifications
This position may be filled at the Transportation Systems Technician B (TST B), Transportation Systems Technician C (TST C), or Transportation Systems Technician D (TST D) depending on qualifications.
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- High School Graduation or GED. AND-
- Possession of a valid Class B CDL without air-brake restrictions or obtain within six (6) months of date of hire.
In addition to the above, the following is also required, depending on qualifying level:
Required experience to qualify at the TST B level is:
- Five (5) years of electrical construction experience; OR-
- Three (3) years as a TST A.
Required experience to qualify at the TST C level is:
- Five (5) years of electrical construction experience or the equivalent Traffic Signal technician classification in another city, county, or state government. NOTE: at least four (4) years of that experience must include experience within the traffic signal and illumination fields; OR-
- Two (2) years as a TST B.
Required experience to qualify at the TST D level is:
- Six (6) years of electrical construction industry, or an equivalent traffic signal technician classification in another city, county, or state government. This experience shall be within the traffic signal and illumination fields.
- Satisfactory completion of two (2) years of service as a TST C, successful completion of the training for TST C, and passing a written and practical examination, incumbent will advance to the Transportation Systems Technician D level.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Journey Level Electrician License (ME01, EL01, EL02, EL04, or EL07)
- Electronics Certification by Washington State CET or International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET)
- Associates Degree in Electronics

- This position may be filled at the Transportation Systems Technician B, Transportation Systems Technician C, or Transportation Systems Technician D depending on qualifications.
- TST B: $64,788 – $78,900
- TST C: $71,520 – $87,144
- TST D: $75,120 – $91,524
- This position is not eligible for remote work.
