Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Building Services provide full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensure the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space. The teams that provide quality maintenance, repair and construction services that support the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University include Campus Maintenance, EMCS, Facilities Operations Support, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. Housing Support is an effective team of employees providing maintenance and repair services, including a safe and secure environment for the 9000 students living in 37 residence halls and 700 apartments. Trade skills include cabinetmaking, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, electronics, sheet metal, roofing, painting and HVAC. We identify, estimate, plan and complete minor facility renovation projects via our own Housing Support internal shops, Facilities Services Construction Shops, and/or private contractors. We provide year-round, 24-hour customer service to our resident students and Housing staff. Housing Support also conducts all scheduled facility maintenance inspections within its facilities. This unit is the primary point of contact for the residence halls and dispatches the request to the appropriate shop.

Position Summary
Provides technical support with a teamwork approach to the Facilities Services Housing Support electronic/electrical shop in the unit’s daily functions, including but not limited to field installation of electronic building access systems, including assisting in the design; routine maintenance on building mechanical access systems and hardware that interfaces with the electronic systems; Preventative Maintenance (PM;) repair of electronic access-security systems including troubleshooting, repair or replacement of electronic devices and controls; providing support for additional electronic systems including fire alarm and security systems; modification of existing electronic systems to improve performance; responding to requests from customers, other technicians and supervisors; and training users in proper utilization of installed equipment. Installs, repairs, troubleshoots and upgrades electrical systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code and University specifications.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to consistently perform diverse and complex tasks in the installation and maintenance of a wide range of electronic/electrical systems including electronic building access control systems; maintenance on building mechanical access systems and hardware that interfaces with the electronic systems; and building secondary electrical systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code and University specifications.

A valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain one prior to start date.

North Carolina Locksmith License or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.

Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Graduation from a two year technical school or community college and 10 years of experience in the electrical/electronics trade.

Ability to stand for extended periods of time, work from a lift, navigate stairs and climb ladders; work in small tight spaces and bend, stoop and crawl to complete work; move objects weighing up to 50 pounds; work under stressful conditions with critical time constraints (deadlines); and ability to work with small hand tools. As an emergency (mandatory) employee, this individual is subject to emergency response which may require significant physical effort depending on the nature of the emergency.
