Salary Grade:NC20 Salary Range: $64,270 - $112,472

The unique nature of railroads and rail operations (a privately owned/operated and for-profit modal system) requires a high-level of technical support and decision making that supports not only rail-exclusive projects, but vital rail components of highway, port, transit, and economic development project delivery in planning, design, and construction. The Senior Design Engineer is a direct report to the Rail Design Manager.

The position is responsible for the advanced engineering and management direction of major railroad design and construction projects. The engineer oversees multiple private engineering firms and also is responsible for managing the efforts of other NCDOT units in support of assigned projects. The position will be responsible for managing complex multi-million dollar projects from concept level and environmental coordination to preparation of preliminary, right-of-way and final plans, and ultimately through construction. The position is also responsible for development and negotiation of agreements to deliver the projects with stakeholders including municipalities, private railroad partners, and Federal agencies including the Federal Railroad Administration. The position is also responsible for the review of transit and regional/commuter rail projects and other projects that involve or impact railroad corridors. This position requires the individual to coordinate with railroad companies, municipalities, local and state officials, transit authorities, other NCDOT Units, State and Federal agencies including the Federal Railroad Administration, private engineering firms, contractors, and the general public to meet project schedules and develop the correct project design.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


Qualified applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:


  • Considerable knowledge of professional engineering theory, techniques, practices, and procedures as related to railroad design, construction, and operations
  • In depth knowledge of engineering practices and standards
  • Demonstrated ability to apply advanced engineering skills to work with teams of advanced level engineers and technicians
  • Experience coordinating assignments and providing guidance and direction to consultant engineers
  • Demonstrated ability communicating effectively with municipal officials, politicians, citizens, railroad officials, Federal Railroad Administration and/or transit administration officials

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
