New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

Salary Ranges:

Engineer-in-Training I: $64,931 - $66,192/annually
Engineer-in Training II: $68,460 - $73,487/annually

Description of Job

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has two vacancies for Engineer-in-Training I or II candidates in our Golden location. Under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, these positions apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards to highway projects. These positions will carry out established work processes and operations pertaining to design plans and construction inspection/oversight and learn to take on progressively more complex assignments requiring independent engineering judgment.

These positions provide candidates the opportunity for advancement.


Major duties and responsibilities
include, but are not limited to:
  • Learn to complete assigned design project tasks using engineering practices and calculation methods. Gather information from various resources to incorporate into design plans. Assist with preparing construction plans and specifications.
  • Learn to review plans and specifications to identify problems with constructability, potential claims for additional costs and delays, and negative impacts to the public, local industry, and environment. Learn to recommend changes to minimize potential costs and delays.
  • Conduct inspections of construction project work including field observation, testing of materials in accordance with established Colorado and industry testing procedures, and measuring and documenting work and quantities.
  • Learn to document and approve progress and final contract payments due for work completed and accepted; review pay documentation prepared by staff and oversee and check cumulative payment reports as well as authorizations complied by computer programs.
  • Learn to ensure contract compliance with plans and specifications by monitoring and documenting the contractor's work during construction.
  • Assist with drafting change orders and minor contract revisions. Check calculations and tabulated quantities summarized in plan. Assist with preparing project pay estimates, schedules, and other project documentation.
  • Assist with maintaining official project records and ensure project files are properly placed in latest document database.
  • Attend training to develop and improve engineering skills and background.
  • Abide by all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with opportunity for flexible hours depending upon assigned projects
  • Opportunity to work from home 1-2 days a week after training is completed
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range
  • Approximately 30% spent in the field, 70% spent in the office
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • May be required to attend public and/or night meetings
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
  • Required to work in various weather conditions such as hot, cold, humid or windy conditions.
  • Required to work in close proximity to heavy traffic
  • Required to work on variable terrain at project sites
  • May need to assist with road closures during major weather events

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Engineer-in-Training I Minimum Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, preferably civil engineering. We will accept May 2023 graduates.

Engineer-in-Training II Minimum Qualifications
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. You must provide your EI number on your application.

Substitutions:
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer-Intern or a licensed Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may substitute.

College Transcripts:

  • A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • If you are a May 2023 graduate, you must provide a copy of your transcript showing that an engineering degree has been conferred by the date of hire as a condition of employment.
  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors, hereafter referred to as the Board, within three years of appointment to the position. Individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must also obtain licensure as a professional engineer by the Board within eight years of appointment to the position.

  • Familiarity with rules/regulations/manuals such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), CDOT Construction Manual, M&S Standards and Specifications, CDOT Materials Manual, Erosion Control & Stormwater Quality Guide, and the AASHTO Geometric Design of Highways and Streets Guide.
  • Fluency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, MicroStation Open Road Designer, SAP, Google Suite, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability.
  • Excellent reasoning, investigate, analytical, and problem solving ability.
