Job description
As an Engineering Manager at Everlaw, you'll play a central role within our engineering org. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you'll manage a team that assists in building product, infrastructure, and tools to grow the business. You'll be instrumental in designing and implementing critical engineering processes, and you'll collaborate closely with engineers and Engineering Operations to drive forward key initiatives and projects. The coaching and leadership you provide will cater to the growth of our engineers, and support and empower them to do their best work.
Engineering is the backbone of the Everlaw Platform. We build features and functionality into the product and ensure its smooth functioning. We also provide data and insights to the rest of Everlaw. At our core, we like to build and enjoy the creative process of building software that is smart, that works well, that scales well, and that is reliable and secure. We do this by supporting and empowering our team members to do their best work, by tackling challenging and complex engineering problems and by nurturing and supporting each team member through mentoring, coaching, and comprehensive feedback.
At Everlaw, our mission is to promote justice by illuminating truth. Our company culture is open and vibrant. We're committed to the professional growth of our team members, offering an annual Learning and Development stipend and regular check-ins with managers regarding career goals. If you're looking for a place that values passion, integrity, thinking big, and a desire to learn, we'd love to hear from you! Think you're missing some of the skills and are hesitant to apply? We do not believe in the "perfect" candidate and encourage you to apply if you feel you can bring value to our team. Learn more about Life at Everlaw.
This is a full-time exempt position based in our Oakland, California office with a hybrid work schedule: in office M/W/Th with the option to work from home Tu/Fr.

Getting started

    • We want you to feel like part of the team early on! Our onboarding process will integrate you into the company with informative sessions on our product, policies, processes, and team structure and goals. And you'll spend meaningful time getting to know your direct reports and discover what excites and challenges them.
    • We're excited for you to learn, grow, and contribute right away! We trust that you'll bring experience and knowledge that will uplift and uplevel the team, but we don't expect you to know everything on Day 1.

In your role, you'll…

    • Develop a feature end to end from conception to Production in order to get some experiential knowledge of what your reports do and what our development and release processes look like.
    • Understand the engineering needs of the company through the eyes of various stakeholders at Everlaw.
    • Actively coach your team with timely and actionable feedback synthesized from various peers.
    • Coach and develop your team of engineers by guiding their projects and weighing in where needed on technical approaches and tradeoffs.
    • Contribute to hiring and growing the team by recruiting engineers and improving our hiring processes.
    • Foster an environment of learning and growth.
    • Work closely and collaboratively with Engineering Operations and Product to improve our processes for Engineers.
    • Work closely with Engineers and Product Leads to weigh in on priorities for the Engineering organization.
    • Weigh in with insights to define and drive the objectives and key results of the Engineering organization.
    • Lead from the trenches by managing, coordinating and executing on large-scale initiatives, such as release automation, security infrastructure, and major product developments.
    • Serve as a catch-all facilitator for your team and be their biggest advocate.

About You

    • You have at least 4 years of engineering experience as a Software Engineer.
    • You have in-depth experience with some combination of: cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, high-security domains, complex web development.
    • You're a motivator and listener with effective outbound communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • You have a working knowledge across a breadth of computer science: programming languages, distributed systems, search, AI, data visualization, and real-time collaboration. You're not required to be an expert in all of these areas, but it helps to be an expert in some.
    • You lead from the front by setting a good example and being willing to tackle less glamorous tasks, holding yourself accountable, and frankly acknowledging mistakes.
    • You collaborate and foster trust with peer functions by leading and driving initiatives forward with or without your direct reports.
    • You have a love of building systems and writing code (even if you're not able to do so anymore!)

Benefits

    • The expected salary range for this role is between $160,000 and $215,000. The final offered salary will be dependent upon many factors including the candidate's experience and skills. The base pay range is subject to change in the future.
