Position Summary:

The Environmental, Health, and Safety Manager (EHS) leads the development, implementation and ongoing management of EHS programs promoting a safe work environment for our employees and maintaining regulatory compliance for EHS related activities and processes. The EHS manager leads the implementation and ongoing education and management of plant safety and health programs and assists in the implementation and monitoring of all programs utilized to drive an Incident/Injury Free culture. This is done through continuous communication with all employees regarding safety & compliance practices and constantly promoting a safe work environment for our employees. This position will monitor and assist in the delivery of training as well as provide oversight to the Health and Safety risk assessment process/program. The EHS managers supports all aspects of environmental compliance to lead a best-in-class environmental program.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead efforts to develop and implement policies, processes and procedures to ensure awareness and compliance with EH&S regulations including the development & facilitation of plant safety committees, inspecting plant facilities to identify potential hazards, analyzing logs and reports, and responding, documenting and implementing corrective action where necessary
  • Facilitate, develop and maintain the behaviors and attitudes that support the goals of an Incident/ Injury Free culture
  • Proactively manage H&S in a manner that drives sustainable continuous improvement, including a Behavior Based Safety Program
  • Direct the development of strategic and tactical approaches for dealing with H&S issues and concerns
  • Support and maintain regular and effective communications with site management regarding H&S matters
  • Conducts Job analysis with purpose of identifying hazards and implementing corrective action where necessary
  • Identifies and completes Industrial Hygiene monitoring requirements, chemical handling & hazardous waste management to ensure that operating practices are in full compliance with regulations and that employees are not exposed to hazardous substances
  • Help design training for all levels of employees, both factory and office staff, including New Employee Safety Orientation as well as managing on-going safety initiatives
  • Educate, enforce and interpret company policies and procedures related to Health and Safety
  • Investigate, evaluate, and document work-related injuries according to worker's compensation laws and other regulations by exercising judgment based on regulatory knowledge and experience
  • Coordinate employee return to work and modified duty programs to maintain compliance with all regulations and employee physician limitations
  • Initiates recommendations to change or modify existing documents or methods in order to correct problems or to accommodate changes in procedures. Maintains site hard copy and digital safety files and records
  • Develop company policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local EHS laws through knowledge of appropriate regulations and by monitoring regulation changes to identify areas that may affect Company's operations or liability
  • Correspond with appropriate agencies to conduct site investigations, report actions taken by the Company to correct discrepancies, submit all required applications, forms, licenses, and permits and remain in compliance with regulations
  • Provide and maintain documentation for training and certification (where applicable) in safety regulations, procedures, and compliance requirements to personnel that deal with specific environmental responsibilities (e.g., chemicals, air, water, solid wastes, emergency response team)
  • Maintain cohesive relationships with outside organizations (e.g., fire & police departments, rescue teams, HAZ-MAT response, state police, etc.) to promote open communications, prepare response plans and to ensure comprehensive support in case of emergency
  • Responsible for annual review and revision of site disaster recovery plan and revision to evacuation documents
  • Work with extended management team to develop Annual EHS plans and goals
  • Work with Plant Operations staff to identify and evaluate potential manufacturing problems, suggestions for waste reduction, or deviations in (EHS) policies and make recommendations for corrections
  • Responsible for all aspects of environmental programs including air, water and waste permits and local compliance requirements.
  • Manage EHS related spending and budget in accordance with site financial guidance, and develop EHS related programs to drive additional cost savings plant-wide

Additional Responsibilities

  • Develops and conducts a variety of safety training courses and presents to large groups of employees
  • Represents Durcon during OSHA and other regulatory inspections and audits
  • Conducts accident investigations and audits identifying hazards and implementing corrective action where necessary
  • Identifies and completes Industrial Hygiene monitoring requirements to support and assure employees are not exposed to hazardous substances
  • Works with Plant Production staff, internal and external resources, and management in the development of safe new processes and equipment
  • Support Human Resources (HR) with injury/illness recordkeeping & reporting
  • Assist (HR) with reporting and investigation of Workers Compensation programs and process improvements

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of EH&S laws/regulations and strategies for ensuring compliance with OSHA, TCEQ and Texas Department of Health requirements as well as site specific H&S policies and procedures.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Demonstrated experience in H&S strategy development and implementation in a diverse environment
  • Experienced as a change agent that can work effectively at all levels of an organization
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc)
  • Ability to be self-directed and multi-task.
  • Ability to work within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement compliance, training, or other business programs
  • Must have a “hands on" management style

Educational/Training/Experience:

  • College level degree with 5 years of HSE experience in industry is preferred. An AAS Degree or technical diploma in Occupational Safety & Health or Environmental Science with at least 3 years of HSE experience in industry, or equivalent is required
  • Previous experience driving a Safety Culture Change in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment preferred
  • Professional certification in industrial hygiene, safety, environmental science or hazardous materials management preferred.

  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent standing, walking and lifting
  • Ability to sit and keyboard
