Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking industry-leading, Experienced Geotechnical Engineers to be an integral part of expanding our in-house expertise across multiple locations. We are actively hiring for ownership-level opportunities in Denver (Lakewood, CO) and the San Francisco Bay Area (Emeryville, CA).

With an in-depth knowledge of the investigation, evaluation, design, and remediation of various geotechnical and geological conditions, you will pursue the projects you want to work on, foster client relationships, manage projects, and mentor up-and-coming staff, all while still getting to do the hands-on technical work you are passionate about.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical practice development, including collaborating with WJE geotechnical engineers in other offices, providing interdisciplinary WJE project teams with in-house expertise on geotechnical conditions and applications specific to the local region, fostering an external client base in forensic geotechnical engineering, and mentoring/training of future staff
  • Project management, including client development, project scoping, assembling and managing appropriate project teams, maintaining project schedules and budgets, and managing client expectations and deliverables
  • Contributions to company-wide objectives through mentoring, participation in office and company development initiatives, participation with in-house Technical Resource Groups (TRGs), involvement in professional organizations, and business development to attract new and repeat clients

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Geotechnical Engineer in relevant state(s)
  • 15+ years of relevant industry experience (20+ preferred), including significant hands-on technical and project management experience in one or more of the following geological regions:
    • Rocky Mountain Region (Denver)
    • West Coast Region (Bay Area)
  • Master’s degree or better in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in geotechnical engineering applications relevant to regional soil conditions, including but not limited to: design and performance evaluation of foundations for various structure types relevant to the region (including deep foundations); hands-on investigation and testing methods to diagnose distressed conditions; underpinning, ground improvement, and other remedial measures for distressed structures; slope stability and earth retention; and settlement issues
  • Dedicated self-starter, motivated to build a new consulting practice based on a "principles first" problem-solving approach
  • Effective technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated competency in transitioning quickly between multiple priorities while maintaining effective coworker and client relationships

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires visual acuity and listening ability. Individuals must have the dexterity to be able to operate office and field equipment such as computers, printers, fax machines, copiers, telephones, voice mail systems, and other office and field equipment. Requirements may also include:

  • Ability to attend meetings at various office, field, and construction sites
  • Ability to perform observations of exploratory pits and soil sampling
  • Ability to take measurements of piezometers, inclinometers, etc.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform in the temperature extremes presented by work in the outdoors
  • Ability to read geotechnical reports, geological maps, construction drawings, printed materials, and computer screens
  • Ability to record data clearly and write passages for reports, letters, etc.
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to safely work in excavations and at heights
  • Ability to safely use and/or operate ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and other access equipment
  • Ability to understand and appreciate safety training specific to numerous workplace and construction hazards
  • Ability to safely work in a variety of occupationally hazardous locations
  • Medically fit to utilize respiratory protection devices and other forms of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Ability to drive and safely operate a motor vehicle

Annual starting base salary (gross): $112,600 to $178,700. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on several factors including consideration for a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies, and proficiency for the role. Base salary is one component of our total compensation package for employees.
