Summary
Baylor College of Medicine is seeking an Eye Bank Technician I for the Lion's Eye Bank. The ideal candidate will procure tissue from local hospitals, morgues and funeral homes. The candidate will evaluate corneal tissue to determine whether it is suitable for donation.
This position will be based out of Corpus, Christi.
Job Duties
- Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
- Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
- Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
- Performs internal processing of tissues.
- Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
- Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
- Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
- Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
- Contacts families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
- Enters referral data into database.
- Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree either AA, BS or BA.
- Certified in COA, COT or COMT through JCAHPO.
- Two years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
- Experience in a tissue banking, funeral homes or working with next of kin.
