JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision,performs a variety of basic and routine custodial and maintenance tasks involving the cleaning, maintenance, and repair of county buildings, facilities, equipment, and adjoining premises.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This is an entry-level position in the custodial maintenance series. Work is performed with and without immediate supervision in assigned areas, and may involve working around other county staff and the public, depending upon assignments. This class performs a variety of custodial and facility maintenance duties that require basic knowledge and skills related to the position.
- Performs a full range of custodial duties including, but not limited to, dusting and polishing furniture, trim work, counters, window sills, window blinds, and other fixtures; empties, cleans, and lines waste receptacles, and disposes of trash; washes and cleans doors, windows, walls, ceilings, floors, window blinds, furniture, toilets, sinks, and light fixtures; polishes metalwork; re-stocks supplies in restrooms, break rooms, and other places as needed.
- Vacuums, shampoos, steams, extracts, and performs minor repairs to carpets and rugs; may assist in performing more skilled carpet installation and repair; sweeps, mops, scrubs, strips, stains, and polishes floors.
- Washes walls, ceilings, and floors of high volume public restrooms by using a high-pressure washer and specialized cleaning equipment.
- Washes building interiors, exteriors, and windows from ladders, scaffolding, lifts, and other elevation equipment.
- Maintains specialized work carts and supply areas with materials and equipment required for the work; monitors and maintains inventory of parts and supplies; estimates time and material needed for jobs assigned; requisitions tools and supplies as needed.
- Performs basic rough and finished carpentry repair of structures including, but not limited to, partitions, walls, doors, window frames, roofs, decks, fences, and gates; repairs and installs sheetrock and may perform wall plastering repairs; installs finish materials such as baseboard, trim, and moldings; repairs and installs doors and door hardware; changes and keys locks; installs security hardware.
- Constructs, assembles, disassembles, modifies, and rearranges cabinets and office furnishings, including bookcases, tables, chairs, benches, and specialized furniture.
- Sets up, arranges, takes down, and removes furniture for special functions and meetings.
- Performs basic electrical work for switches, outlets, plugs, cables, appliances, and lighting systems; reports unsafe electrical conditions.
- Identifies and performs basic repairs of plumbing leaks or breaks; opens clogged lines and drains; replaces seals and other minor parts; maintains sinks, drinking fountains, and toilets; repairs, replaces, and maintains water heaters and other appliances and fixtures.
- Maintains grounds in clean, safe, and orderly manner including mowing, trimming, watering, weeding, aerating, minor pest management, composting, and fertilizing lawns; replaces plants as needed; sets sprinklers; replaces sprinkler heads; adjusts automatic time clocks and system pressure if necessary; cleans debris from grounds, pathways, and parking lots; maintains grounds maintenance equipment; prunes trees and shrubs.
- Lays forms, mixes, pours, finishes, and repairs concrete for sidewalks, pavers, ramps, and slabs.
- Shovels snow from walkways and applies salt or ice-melt where appropriate.
- Closes and locks doors and windows, and otherwise secures buildings; turns off lights.
- Reports unauthorized persons and other security breaches.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of service to customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- Keeps basic records of work performed, timesheets, etc.
- Operates a county motor vehicle over short and long distances.
- Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; helps supervisor prepare to resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Observes safe working practices, including maintaining storage and working areas in a safe and orderly condition; reports the need for maintenance or repair of facilities to the appropriate supervisor; corrects or reports any fire or safety hazards; places safety barriers in public areas; maintains equipment, materials and supplies in proper condition.
- Follows label instructions to mix and dilute cleansers, disinfectants, stripping agents, and other chemicals to ensure proper strength for use; properly labels and maintains Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of
- Specialized materials, methods, and techniques used in assigned area of responsibility.
- Proper cleaning methods, and the safe usage of cleaning materials, disinfectants, chemicals, tools, and equipment related to the position.
- Proper use, operation, and minor maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in association with the position.
- Safety practices and equipment related to the work; basic shop mathematics; basic record keeping practices.
- Basic techniques for dealing with the public.
- Correct English usage including grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary.
Ability to
- Perform specialized duties in the assigned area of responsibility.
- Safely using hand tools and power equipment related to the work; understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments; work with and without close supervision in standard work situations.
- Contribute effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
LICENSING, EDUCATION & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Possess and maintain a valid Nevada Driver License appropriate for vehicles and other equipment operated.
- The ability to pass a criminal background investigation.
- Any combination of training, education, and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is possession of a high school diploma or equivalency.
- The ability to pass a criminal background investigation.
- Military experience applicable to the duties of this position and U.S. Armed Forces Veteran status may be preferred.

- Working Environment. Most of the work is performed indoors, but some outside work is required in all types of weather. Assignments may require working independently in isolated geographic areas. Work extended shifts or be called back in emergency situations.
