PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Family Physician – Special Projects Faculty will be a member of the Special Projects Team, participating in educational and clinical activities supporting MAHEC’s response to the Opioid Crisis as well as other urgent population health issues such as HIV care, Hepatitis C care, the COVID19 Pandemic, and care of the incarcerated and recently incarcerated populations. The educational activities will enhance the training of fellows, residents, medical students, and other health care trainees and providers in the community, the WNC region, and across the state. The faculty member will also provide direct primary care services for a panel of patients in the FHC-Biltmore or the satellite practices as needed, and will serve as preceptor for FM residents providing ambulatory care in the FHC-Biltmore.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
CLINICAL
- Maintain own panel of patients with scheduled patient care time in the Family Health Center at Biltmore and/or Satellite location to include evening call as needed/scheduled; and Saturday morning clinic.
- May also participate in coverage at any FHC location during vacation or FPS service.
- Assist with a panel of patients for the Department of Public Safety Project.
- Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) with waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for patients with Opioid Use Disorder
- Optional clinical services include
- Teaching Attending on FM Hospital Service
- Prenatal Care
- Full scope Maternity care
- Night call and weekend coverage, with compensatory “flex” time.
TEACHING
- Participate in and create treating pain safely talks to community, providers and staff
- Participate in teaching activities for residents and medical students at the Family Health Center.
- Serve as a faculty advisor and mentor for residents and Addiction Medicine Fellows.
- Promote and participate in continuing education programs of the department, to include didactics in areas of interest in Family Medicine
- Teach medical students, pharmacy students, medical residents, pharmacy residents, MPH students, and fellows in our substance use disorders curricula
RESEARCH
- Demonstrate commitment to community-based health sciences and research.
- Pursue scholarly activity.
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Participate, based on experience/skills, on committees and work groups as appropriate within the Division and within MAHEC.
- Coordinate and give talks on substance use disorders to providers, public health, and law enforcement and at community forums.
- Participate in meetings and be on and/or lead committees on the substance use disorders crisis at the local, regional and state level.
- Coordinate and give buprenorphine 101 talks, buprenorphine half and half talks, provide technical assistance for providers wanting to start prescribing buprenorphine.
- Participate and lead ECHOS, including, but not limited to chronic pain, MAT, substance use disorders ECHOS
- Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives at the practice and ACO levels
- Become waiver trained to provide buprenorphine in our clinics
- Lead Chronic pain and MAT group visits

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 3 years clinical practice experience post residency training, or completion of faculty development fellowship preferred. Teaching experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Licensure to practice medicine in North Carolina.
- Certification by the American Board of Family Practice.
- Appointment in good standing to the medical staff of Mission Health System.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Experience using Electronic Medical Records preferred.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to patients required.
- Ability to effectively present information in group situations and respond to questions from individuals and groups required.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, legal documents, or governmental regulations required.
- Ability to document medical information into patient records/charts required
FOREIGN LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Spanish speaking skills preferred.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Chair, Department of Family Medicine.
