POSITION PURPOSE
Under the direction of the VP of Youth Development with support from VP of Risk and Safety and HR Team, the Positive Specialist is responsible for promoting mental health and positive behavior support for program participants and families through support and training of Y staff. The Positive Behavior Specialist will provide individual incident/case support, planning for the content and implementation of staff development and resources related to mental health.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Partner with subject matter experts from each department to ensure that age-appropriate curriculum (ages preschool through teen) for program participants, families, and staff is age appropriate and addresses supportive strategies for positive behavior management and mental health.
  • Provides Behavior Management resources and best practices to Y staff and program participants/families.
  • With the SMEs and Y staff, provides tools and resources for communications with parents of youth having consistent issues.
  • Prepares reports to track progress and identify trends.
  • Conduct Child Care and Camp observations that focus on positive behavior management and youth development.
  • Support Y staff daily through behavior management, parent communication, staff communication, staff development, crisis intervention, and more.
  • Support Risk and Safety team and Branch leadership with challenging member behaviors or issues as they arise. Creating strategies to support our member community and staff team in response to behavior trends.
  • Serves as SME and consultant for individual issues related to mental health, trauma and positive behavior management for the Association. Responsible for partnering with leadership to identify and respond to trends.
  • In partnership with the HR learning and development team, create and conduct monthly staff trainings to provide the group with a professional development tool to assist with positive behavior management at their site/branch.
  • In partnership with SMEs, the Risk and Safety Team and/or HR, build and maintain relationships with external partners who can provide expertise, support and referrals that will enhance the member and staff experience.
  • Meet with Risk & Safety, HR and SMEs regularly to discuss any concerns and provide the appropriate support Association-wide.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work mental health or required field required,
  • Experience working within youth development for 5 years or more
  • Skill in individual and group assessment and treatment techniques.
  • Ability to formulate eligibility recommendations for emotional impairment.
  • Demonstrated initiative and understanding in working with youth, parents/guardians, teachers, staff and other community leaders
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written communications.
  • Experience in training and development of staff within youth programs.
  • Knowledge of positive behavior intervention strategies and successful experience in writing and implementing behavior intervention plans.
  • Knowledge of social skills needed to change behavior and ability to integrate training into classroom activities.
  • Knowledge of community resources and experience with a variety of agencies.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and carry out responsibilities during times of crisis.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member in developing and providing services to students, staff, etc.
