Job description

Sierra Ambulance provides paramedic ambulance service to the communities of Eastern Madera County, CA. We are located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, 18 miles south of Yosemite National Park, and 50 miles north of Fresno on State Route 41. We serve the communities of Oakhurst, Ahwahnee, Bass Lake, North Fork, Coarsegold, Yosemite Lakes, Raymond, Fish Camp, O Neals, and portions of Yosemite National Park and the Sierra National Forest; over 1,000 square miles in all. The total population of all of these communities is just over 30,000. Sierra Ambulance is a non-profit corporation founded in 1964.

Sierra Ambulance is looking for a Full Time Paramedic to fill an opening in our workforce. Sierra Ambulance staffs three (3) ambulances 24/7 from our stations in Oakhurst, Bass Lake and Coarsegold.

General

The EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) position at Sierra Ambulance Service is a multi-faceted position that includes but is not limited to patient care responsibilities. The job duties have been broken down into specific areas to give the applicant and/or employee a clear picture of the job responsibilities and requirements.

Patient Care & Medical Skills

The EMT-P is expected to perform those skills consistent with the State of California scope of practice and local expanded scope of practice for an EMT-P and within the guidelines of protocols and policies as dictated by the EMS agency for Madera County. The EMT-P is usually the primary caregiver in most pre-hospital incidents and therefore has primary responsibility for the delivery of high quality pre-hospital medical care. Additionally, the EMT-P is expected to be able to manage each scene and available resources in a manner that provides the best medical care in the most timely fashion.

Motor Vehicle Operation

The EMT-P is usually scheduled to work with an EMT-I and during such time, the EMT is responsible for daily mechanical inspection of their scheduled vehicle, is the designated primary vehicle operator and is absolutely responsible for the safe and smooth transport of patients to the hospital. At times, an EMT-P may be scheduled as the primary vehicle operator and will be responsible for all of the duties that lie therein. The vehicle operator must be able to operate an ambulance during transport in a manner that allows the attendant to provide proper medical care and patient comfort. Also required is the ability to drive an emergency vehicle under code-3 (emergency) conditions in a safe but expedient manner.

Patient Rescue

While Sierra Ambulance Service is not responsible for technical or high angle rescue, the EMT-P is expected to become familiar with rescue equipment and be able to access their patients to ensure proper treatment, extrication, and assessment whenever possible. This would include low to mid angle rope rescue, as well as climbing into vehicle wreckage. When on the scene of a medical emergency involving multiple agencies, patient rescues and/or multiple patients, SAS personnel are encouraged to oversee all patient care activities as resources permit. This requirement does not, however, mandate that the employee place him or herself in any unwarranted danger or in a situation that he or she could not perform safely.

Walking and Hiking

Due to the mountainous terrain of our service area, Sierra field personnel are frequently required to walk or hike for long distances over uneven and steep terrain in order to access patients. They are required to be capable of performing this function as well as being able to assist in the carrying of patients under the same conditions.

Lifting and Carrying

All Sierra field personnel are required to be able to assist in a two-person lift of a patient of up to 200 pounds. Personnel are also required to be able to carry or move other heavy objects such as medical and rescue equipment, desks, chairs, and office equipment. Being able to lift and carry patients who are secured to backboards, KEDs, gurneys, and Stokes litters is also required.

Sitting and Driving for Extended Time Periods

All Sierra field personnel are required to be able to drive, sit in the passenger seat or patient compartment for extended periods to include but not be limited to 2 or more hours over mountain roads.

Education and Experience Requirements

In order to qualify for employment as an EMT-P with Sierra Ambulance Service, the applicant must possess the following:

1. A valid EMT-P card issued by the California EMS Authority.

2. Accreditation by the local EMS Agency (CCEMSA).

3. A valid California drivers license with a valid Ambulance Driver Certificate.

4. A DMV printout of drivers license status and activity.

5. A valid DMV medical certificate (MCSA-5876).

6. A current CPR provider card.

7. A current ACLS provider card.

Previous EMS field experience is strongly preferred.

Local residency is not a hiring requirement but local residents are given hiring preference because of staffing needs.
