Announcement:
Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) is seeking a full-time, D-basis Counseling position to provide high quality counseling services to LAMC CalWORKs and Dream Resource Center students. Serve as a member of a team that supports learning as well as self-understanding in order to promote effective decision-making in our students. Encourage students to develop personal responsibility in order to achieve their goals leading them to self-sufficiency. Counseling services include specialized academic counseling and advising and coordination with other student services programs and instructional faculty.
About the College and Department:
LAMC is one of the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) and is located in the San Fernando Valley. With an enrollment of approximately 10,000, LAMC offers a wide range of academic and career technical education programs, and transfers students to leading public and private colleges and universities.
The LAMC Counseling Department consists of experienced and professionally trained faculty who work with students concerning educational goals, career planning, transfer to four-year institutions, and other academic and personal issues affecting student success. The department includes counselors who work as general counselors and those who work in programs providing specialized services to targeted groups of students. All counseling faculty are expected to participate in regular department meetings and professional development activities, as well as participate in college-wide activities and shared governance committees.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational counseling, guidance counseling, social work, or career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling; OR
- the equivalent.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds of community college students and familiarity with issues related to student equity.
NOTE: A Bachelor's degree in one of the above listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
Eligibility Requirement: COVID 19 VACCINATION
Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Placement on salary schedule is determined by academic preparation and/or employment experience in accordance with AFT Contract. The salary ranges are $86,856 - $131,112 for the 12 month academic year depending on experience and professional preparation. The doctoral differential is $418 per month. Applicants with a doctoral degree are eligible for a doctoral differential. District benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
The LAMC CalWORKs/Dream Resource Center counselor has the following duties and responsibilities:
- Serves as a regular member of the Counseling Department faculty with an assignment to the CalWORKs and Dream Resource Center Programs.
- Provide academic, career, and personal counseling (face to face and/or online) using culturally responsive techniques and equitable practices for engaging all CalWORKs and Dream Resources Center students, especially those who are of various immigration status, as well as racially and ethnically diverse, specifically undocumented and mixed status.
- Conduct counseling sessions to support counseling objectives (i.e. career explorations, at-risk student retention initiatives, college student survival skills, job readiness, etc.).
- Teach and coordinates Personal Development workshops and conduct noncredit classroom orientations.
- Develop Abbreviated and Comprehensive Student Educational Plans.
- Attend meetings and conferences relating to the program.
- Maintains student academic files; monitors student progress and achievements; identifies academic and related problems, and provides guidance where additional support is warranted.
- Maintains appropriate student counseling records and data, prepare student reports, claims, forms or documents requested by the Department of Public Social Services and other agencies; submit all required data and reports in a timely manner.
- Audits student files for completeness and accuracy; contact students for more information as necessary.
- Assists in the creation of programs and services to promote student learning and retention.
- Responds in a timely manner to requests for information; assists students and staff with research, information verification and problem solving.
- Assists with student activities (i.e. orientations, end of year recognition program, etc.) and participates in recruitment activities.
- Performs professional responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college, counseling discipline, division and programs.
- Performs a variety of counseling functions and activities pertaining to the operation of the CalWORKs and Dream Resource Center Programs.
- Collaborates with instructional departments to create support services and/or to enhance existing support services for CalWORKs and Dream Resource Center students.
- Works closely with and serves as a liaison to county offices and community-based organizations in support of CalWORKs and Undocumented students.
- Makes presentations regarding CalWORKs program and services on and off campus as required for information dissemination and program visibility.
- Attends on and off campus meetings, workshops and conferences related to the CalWORKs program including CalWORKs and TANF legislation and implementation
- Serves as an advocate for CalWORKs and Dream Resource Center students.
- Uses technology as warranted, including completing student documents electronically, and corresponding with L.A. County staff and students via e-mail among other things.
- Assists students with the annual California Community Colleges CalWORKs Association Student Voices publication which highlights students’ personal stories.
- Utilizes PeopleSoft/SIS and Cranium Café online platform with high proficiency and mastery to assist students virtually.
- Participate in counseling related events and activities, such as Guided Pathways, GraduationPetition Drives, enrollment, and onboarding.
- Performs other duties related to the operation of the Counseling Department, CalWORKs and Dream Resource Center Programs as needed.
- Makes students aware of on-campus and off-campus community resources as well as provide information on study skills and other college success strategies.
- Makes referrals as needed.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Minimum of one year or more of recent (within the past five years) paid work experience, post master’s degree, as a counselor in a California Community College.
- Knowledge of the transfer process and requirements, articulation agreements, ADT transfer degrees, and computerized transfer resources, such as Assist, CSU Mentor, TCW (Transfer Counselor Website).
- Extensive experience in developing and facilitating workshops related to educational and career planning, probation, study skills, and other topics supportive of student success.
- Participation in regional and statewide Undocumented student support activities and professional development.
- Experience teaching Counseling Courses.
- Knowledge of Guided Pathways, Career and Academic Pathways, and Program Mapper.
- Success and commitment as a team player, including the abiliity to foster collegiality and engage in collaborative problem solving.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, such as development and/or coordination of student servicesprograms and activities, and represent the Counseling Department on campus committees,workgroups, or initiatives.
- Ability to work effectively with computers and other forms of advanced technology tools utilizedin providing high quality counseling and teaching, including PeopleSoft, ConexED (CraniumCafé, Calibrate, Classrooms), Canvas, PowerPoint, online Counseling, web-based resources,and other technology as tools to create student education plans (SEP) and to enhanceservices to students.
- Fluent in Spanish.
- Familiarity with and/or experience in addressing issues related to student equity.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES
- A college selection committee will review all completed and approved applications received. T he committee screening will involve the evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications in the areas of training, experience, and personal fitness as determined from the application package and recommendations from referents.
- Selected candidates will be invited for an interview following the committee screening.
- Based upon the committee recommendation, finalists will interview with the president and vice president, who will make the final selection.
