The East New York Farms! (ENYF) Project is a diverse group of gardeners, vendors, farmers and youth working together to strengthen our community through gardens, fresh food, and farmers markets. ENYF is a project of the United Community Centers, Inc.
In collaboration with the Spring Creek Recreational Fund, ENYF is seeking a Garden Educator. This position will oversee garden maintenance and implement a year-round garden curriculum for the Spring Creek Recreational Fund Learning Garden. The Learning Garden provides an outdoor educational space that interacts with 6 different classes from various schools located in the Spring Creek Towers of Starrett City, ENY. The Garden Educator leads garden science and nutrition education classes, while providing a resource and partnership for after-school programs, summer programs, seniors and day school teachers in planning cross-curricular lessons in the outdoor classroom, modeling skills that teachers need to feel comfortable using the garden to teach science standards. We are looking for a person who is committed to using community mobilization as a tool for both personal growth and social change, and who is excited to join a tight-knit organization and community that is leading the way towards food justice.
Role and Responsibilities:
Learning Garden 75%

*Develop and facilitate a food justice centered curriculum for students 8 - 17 years old. *Serve as the point of contact for the Learning Garden. *Develop a crop planning map and maintain crop production at the Learning Garden *Facilitate 6 garden-based education classes per week, incorporating both environmental science and nutrition education as they relate to the garden. *Work with DOE schools and after school providers to recruit students; and schedule and coordinate classes. *Consult with teachers to develop lessons that support classroom teaching and attend necessary school wide events and meetings. *Oversee and coordinate students’ hands-on experiences in the garden (planting, weeding, tending and harvesting)
Community Engagement 10%

*Create opportunities for community members to be included in the daily operations of the Learning Garden *Build involvement in and commitment to the Garden within the community that includes coordinating intergenerational garden programs with Spring Creek Senior Partners, Girl Scouts and additional community stakeholders.
Misc. 5%

*Documenting our work through Google Cloud. *Supporting and/or facilitating youth and staff team building workshops. *Supporting community efforts and organizing. *Track and report attendance and engagement in Garden activities.
Qualifications

*At least two season of farm management *Familiar with and able to grow cultural crops that reflect the ENY community. *Experience working in multicultural environments. *Familiarity with East New York. *Must pass multiple forms of background checks conducted by Spring Creek Recreational Fund *Comfortable working outside in all weather. *Capable of lifting 40 pounds.

Available shifts and compensation: Available shifts on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Compensation is $22.00 - $24.00/hour.
