Reports to: Company President
Function : Assumes responsibility for ensuring the efficient operation of PA production, maintenance, greenhouses and grounds.
Duties and responsibilities:
1. Assumes responsibility for ensuring the efficient and effective operation of the production department and production functions of the Research department by:
- Reviewing and recommending improved operating policies and procedures and ensuring the proper implementation and maintenance of approved changes.
- Making recommendations for personnel regarding employment, performance ratings, salary changes, promotions, transfers and terminations.
- Guiding and advising personnel in the more complex phases of their work to achieve optimum performance levels.
- Oversee the preparation and administration of department and division budgets, including Cap Ex projects.
- Participating with Sales and Supply departments to create annual production plans.
2. Responsible for inventory accuracy of Production and PI liners, has working knowledge of SAP functions
3. Manages the shipping of plug and container inventory to ensure on time delivery using the most cost-effective means.
4. Schedules all propagation functions, develops protocols including, but not limited to, cutting harvest and prop, cutting storage, hormone treatments, grading, trimming and stock build up and maintenance.
5. Oversees all production functions of the breeding department.
6. Assumes responsibility for all aspects of plant production in order to optimize plant growth and yield, as well as aspects of production mechanization and efficiency by:
- Managing activities of the Production Growing team and the Field Grower.
- Monitoring plant growth and health and making any indicated adjustments to ensure crop yields, quality and cycle times are optimized.
- Formulating and implementing production research aimed at improving crop yield and/or Nursery efficiency.
- Develops and implements production protocols for all of the company’s IP.
7. Oversees all maintenance activities, including facility expansion and equipment purchases, as well as managing the Facilities department.
8. Responsible for interacting with Research and Supply for build-up and distribution of potential introductions during product development cycle.
9. Coordinates with New Product Manager on additions and improvements to the display garden.
10. Determines and implements plant health practices company-wide including scouting, pest and fungicide applications and beneficial product solutions
11. Allocates, schedules and manages labor to Research projects, including but not limited to, bare root rose potting, container trial planting, irrigation set up and fertilization, and Research field planting.
12. Responsible for growing/forcing plant material for trade shows, events and photography.
13. Has a working knowledge of Argus environmental controls.
14. Responsible for weather emergency procedures and actions.
15. Purchases supplies needed to carry out departmental tasks.
16. Assumes additional responsibilities as required.
Requirements
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or related field, plus 4-6 years experience or equivalent.
- Must have 4+ years managing others. Department head experience preferred.
- Ability to confidently work with a variety of leaders and advisers, including peers and executives.
- Experienced to manage large scope without direct supervision.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, and able to communicate well to internal and external stakeholders.
- Have essential soft skills vital to the GM role, including: Meeting, Leadership, Communication, Teamwork, Collaboration, Flexibility, Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, & Conflict Resolution.
- Preferred working knowledge of Argus Controls and SAP.
Other
Must be able to operate heavy equipment and machinery, such as front end loaders, forklifts and tractors.
Must have a valid drivers license and a driving record that meets the requirements of our insurance company.
