TITLE: GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER

Summary

This position is a full-time season position (6 months). The person assigned performs a variety of
semi-skilled and skilled work in grounds keeping and maintenance and repair. Maintains the
grounds and landscapes of the Courthouse Complex Facilities. Utilizes tools and equipment
available to accomplish work. A Groundskeeper is a maintenance professional who works on
different properties who are responsible for mowing lawns, trimming weeds, raking leaves and
other various tasks as assigned by manager.

Scope of Responsibility

Individuals assigned to this classification are expected to be competent in their skill area and to
perform proficiently and independently those assignments of a regular and recurring nature. Work
is normally performed outside and in accordance with established and well-known policies,
procedures and safety practices under general supervision of the Facility Maintenance Supervisor.
Supervisor will check progress of work and provide instructions on accomplishing work involving
unusual problems or the use of unfamiliar equipment. Individuals will typically be assigned to
work on different properties included as the Courthouse Complex, however, work site assignments
will be subject to change as determined by supervisor with no notice requirements.

Typical Duties

Receive work orders from supervisor; establish priorities and schedule work allowing for
unscheduled projects which may occur.

Maintain Courthouse Complex grounds by maintaining site landscaping, maintaining lawns, trees,
shrubs, flowers, and spreading mulch.

Trimming trees, hedges, and shrubs and preventing and eliminating weeds.

Raking leaves and prepping outdoor areas for various weather conditions

Operating and maintaining hand tools, such as loppers, mowers, weed eaters, saws and shovels
efficiently.

Perform landscape functions such as grounds preparation around plants and shrubs, mix and apply
fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. Mow, water, weed, trim, edge and renovate lawns, shrubs
and trees.

Maintain sprinkler and irrigation systems.

Perform general labor such as digging ditches by hand and with equipment.

Operate vehicles used to transport materials, tools and equipment, and perform grounds
maintenance tasks.

May need to fill-in for absent staff members including custodians and maintenance staff on an as
needed basis depending on staffing levels to perform custodial tasks in Courthouse Complex
buildings, including sweeping, mopping and sanitizing rest rooms and replenish supplies, hanging
decorations, cleaning and other custodial tasks as assigned.

Inspect buildings, heating and lighting systems, fixtures and other related areas to anticipate future
problems and report to supervisor. Perform preventative maintenance activities such as assisting
others to replace belts, filters and related maintenance tasks as directed by supervisor.

Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within scope of knowledge
or refer to employee of higher classification.

Qualifications

Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the
full scope of responsibility as illustrated by examples in the above job description.

Requires experience as a building and grounds maintenance worker. Requires knowledge of the
use and ability to operate a variety of hand tools and equipment used in the building and grounds
maintenance field. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Working
knowledge of safety hazards and procedures; cognizance of public safety matters. Requires
physical ability for continuous physical effort including frequent bending, climbing, squatting,
manipulation of and lifting of equipment and supplies. Also requires ability to work outdoors in all
types of weather conditions. Requires ability to set priorities and accomplish work activities under
indirect supervision. Requires flexibility of work hours due to weather related temperatures.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Washington State Driver's License.

Physical Demands and Environment

The working environment for Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker is primarily in the field.
The duties require working in all types of weather and extreme temperature conditions. Requires
walking on various types of surfaces including rough terrain, sitting, standing, ability to maintain
balance, climb stairs, ladders and inclines, ability to kneel, bend, stoop, crouch, reach, push, pull,
twist; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, gripping with fingers and hands, shoveling,
digging, lifting and carrying 50 pounds; ability to operate passenger vehicles, and construction
equipment; work at heights, alone and in remote areas; exposure to direct sunlight, outside
temperature extremes, chemicals, liquid and epoxy chemicals, solvents and oils, exposure to
noxious weeds and plants, dust, pollens, insect stings. Ability to hear voice conversations and
alarms. Requires far, side, night, color vision, with depth perception. Requires wearing of hard
hats, safety glasses or goggles, ear plugs or muffs, respirators, rubber or plastic gloves, safety shoes
and rubber boots.
