Canby School District is hiring a full-time groundskeeper, to begin as soon as April 2, 2022.

Under supervision, responsible for using a variety of tools, equipment, and treatments to maintain grounds including planting, cultivating, spraying, pruning, and cutting plants, trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers. Responsible for determining the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds in good condition and do related work as required.


About This Position


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Cuts lawns including trimming and edging.
  • Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
  • Removes trash, damaged plants, grass, leaves, and branches.
  • Sprays lawns, plants, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides.
  • Conditions and prepares soils and transplants or plants seeds, seedlings, or bulbs according to instructions and planned design of the landscaped area.
  • Waters lawns, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Maintains paths and walkways.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and makes minor repairs on power equipment and hand tools.
  • Maintains or assists in maintaining athletic fields including mowing, raking, lining, leveling, repairing, etc.
  • Performs required routine maintenance on athletic fields including grooming, sweeping, and blowing.
  • Operates such equipment as tractors, mowers and gang mowers, trimmers, blowers, lime or fertilizer spreaders, lawn roller, and snow removal equipment.
  • Performs requested work order repair to include, but not limited to fencing, play structures, signs, etc.
  • Operates district vehicles and trucks to transport equipment and materials.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Cut and trim grass areas, shrubs, trees, etc.; fertilize lawns and grounds and apply chemicals as necessary.
  • Maintain irrigation systems.
  • Maintain groundskeeping machines and equipment and work area in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Operate a variety of motorized machinery, hand and power tools, etc, displaying safe operating procedures and practices.
  • Move miscellaneous materials in the performance of the job, or as directed.
  • Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to proper supervisor.
  • Perform other school district related duties as required or directed by supervisor.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prefer education equivalent to completion of 12th grade.
  • Knowledge of basic groundskeeping practices, materials, tools, chemicals, equipment, and safety procedures used in the care of lawns, turf, trees, shrubs, etc.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license and good vehicle operation record.


Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience in landscape maintenance.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.


Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor and operate groundskeeping machinery.
  • Ability to operate power and heavy equipment. Maintains lift certification.
  • Ability to tie down equipment and tow trailers to department standards and safety
  • Knowledge of how to load and unload power and heavy equipment to department standard.
  • Knowledge of lawn, tree and shrub care.
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decision making capabilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintaining effective, professional, and collaborative relationships with supervisors, staff, students, and general public.
  • Ability to operate according to district policies and procedures.

Applicant agrees to assume cost and arrange for FINGERPRINT-BASED CRIMINAL RECORDS CHECK upon offer of employment. ($10-$20 at printing; $66 payroll deduction) In addition to salary, the district pays the employee's 6% PERS contribution.


All district employees will be required to provide proof of vaccination, or documentation of a medical or non-medical exception using the Oregon Health Authorities form.
