Summary:
The Groundskeeper position provides maintenance of the grounds and landscaping for the Museum Main Campus. MFAH Main Campus property includes exhibition buildings, administrative buildings, Glassell School of Art, sculpture garden and plaza, park 288 and adjacent garage areas.
Responsibilities:

  • Maintain site landscaping such as lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers, stair paths, walkways and all other outdoor areas according to groundskeeping schedule
  • Safely use pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers and chemical spray to treat diseases
  • Fertilize lawn, trees, flowers, shrubs, and plants, spreading mulch when necessary to optimize greenery
  • Perform daily landscaping duties as directed including planting, tilling, raking or blowing leaves, and watering plants by hand or through an irrigation system
  • Trim trees, hedges, shrubs, and dead-heading flowers, thoroughly preventing and elimanting weeds
  • Safely operate and maintain power tools, hand-tools, and landscaping equipment
  • Keep museum grounds, sidewalks, and gardens free from trash, litter, debris, weeds, plant diseases and harmful insects
  • Ensure outdoor trash receptacles are regularly emptied and cleaned
  • Regularly clean outdoor water features, benches, and chairs to keep free from leaves and debris
  • Visit Park 288 property weekly to inspect landscaping conditions and implement pest management measures surrounding the building and perimeter
  • Prepare outdoor areas for various weather conditions by weatherproofing, covering outdoor furniture with tarps, tying down unsecured items, etc. in conjunction with the Engineering and Facilities department
  • Implement emergency plans to protect the Museum Main Campus outdoor areas in the event of inclement weather such as drought, freezing temperatures, or hurricanes
  • Perform other related duties and assignments as required, at the direction of the Grounds Manager and/ or Engineering and Facilities supervisory staff

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Must be able to handle the physical aspects of the position to include lifting of up 50 pounds, prolonged bending and climbing and working in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain)
  • Ability to operate various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment
  • Must possess knowledge and ability to use hand tools used for landscaping
  • Able to follow instructions, complete assignments in a timely manner, and work under minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with sprinkler and irrigation system maintenance preferred, but not required
  • Must be available to work rotationally on weekends

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred OR an equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable and demonstrable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
  • Two or more years of landscape maintenance, or other related experience, required

Reports to: Grounds Manager (Main Campus)
Classification: Non Exempt/Hourly
Schedule: Full Time – 40 Hour Work Week
Compensation: $15.00 to $19.00/DOE
Work Location: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
All work will be performed in varied and wide-ranging outdoor environments and related conditions. Physical demands will vary and will include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, stooping, and kneeling. Strength requirements may also vary from light (10 lbs) to heavy (50 lbs + – tandem lifting.)

  • Must undergo and meet company standards for criminal background check and reference checks.
