What You Will Do

The Health Physics Analysis Laboratories (HPAL) program analyzes a variety of samples for the presence of radioactive materials in support of the Laboratory's Nuclear Security Mission. The program performs non-destructive measurements of samples collected in support of the LANL Radiation Protection Program, analyzing over 200,000 samples per year. HPAL has capabilities for measuring a wide variety of radioisotopes for total alpha and beta activity as well as isotopic determinations. Upon qualification, the selected candidate will support the HPAL TA-55 Plutonium Facility during evening and night shifts, working independently and with HPAL technicians.

You will work with the HPAL program to provide quality, defensible, HPAL services to the Laboratory. Your responsibilities will include analyses of samples, review of analyses results, investigating and resolving issues and anomalous results, conducting studies and preparing reports on technical issues, developing procedures and technical basis documents, taking an active role in development and implementation of program improvements, and providing leadership to the HPAL swing shift technician team.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated understanding of properties of ionizing radiation and radiation detection principles.
  • Demonstrated strong working knowledge of the theory and application of radiological instrumentation, such as, gas-flow proportional counters, liquid scintillation counters, high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors, scintillation detectors, or charged particle detectors.
  • Demonstrated high degree of attention to detail in ensuring data quality objectives.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently with general supervision.
  • Experience identifying objectives and directing assignments for swing shift technician team.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Training/Certifications: N/A

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Physical Science, and 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Health Physics or similar
  • Training and experience with radiological instrumentation, specifically Berthold gas-flow proportional counters, Liquid scintillation counters, Impulse, and HPGe detectors.
  • Experience with quality assurance and quality control programs.
  • Experience in training including developing and delivering course content.
  • Demonstrated experience performing reviews of analysis results.

Essential Job Functions(can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to speak, sitting, standing, reaching overhead, typing or keyboarding, and occasionally climbing stairs and ladders.

Work Environment: Occasional use of safety glasses or eye protection, safety shoes or protective footgear, hearing protection, radiological facilities requiring dosimetry.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q(Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
