HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER- LE SUEUR HIGHWAY SHOP


Department: Highway FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Le Sueur County Highway Department has an opening for a full time Highway Maintenance Worker. The individual will be based out of the Le Sueur Shop.

Salary: $22.91 per hour to potentially $25.47 per hour (based on experience)

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled trades work in the installation, maintenance, cleaning and repair of public roadways, buildings and property, operating various types of equipment, performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks, responding to after hour or emergency needs, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Highway Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Functions

  • Performs road and equipment maintenance including cleaning, maintenance, installation and repair, snow maintenance and cleanup, sanding and salting, installing signage, repairing and replacing surfaces, cleaning culverts, cutting, trimming and treating trees and brush, installing mailboxes, and general turf maintenance.
  • Attends various meetings.
  • Participates in taking equipment and supply inventory.
  • Performs general building maintenance.
  • Performs above duties for other municipalities and governments.
  • Operates a variety of material moving equipment used in the maintenance and repair of gravel and bituminous highways, and in the maintenance of roadside ditches.
  • Assists with inspecting equipment to ensure proper fuel levels, tire pressure and overall condition are conducive to safe operations; reports broken or malfunctioning parts or equipment to the supervisor.
  • Performs routine maintenance to vehicles and equipment including cleaning, changing oil and greasing parts.
  • Logs daily activities including time spent on each job, gas consumption, and maintenance performed or required, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating small, medium and heavy trucks and equipment; thorough knowledge of the general mechanical operation of tools of the trade; general knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; general knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of equipment; thorough skill understanding the mechanical operation of public works equipment, tools and materials; thorough skill and care in the operation of the equipment; mechanical aptitude; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to work independently with little or no supervision; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors, and the general public.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and considerable experience working as a highway maintenance worker, working with large equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires standing and walking; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).

Special Requirements

  • CPR/First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement in the State of Minnesota.

The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.
