NVA Compassion-First and Colorado Animal Specialty & Emergency are looking for an experienced Hospital Director at our state-of-the-art medical facility in Boulder, Colorado! Our ideal candidate will be a seasoned and highly qualified leader whose experience includes successfully managing teams of 100+ employees and accomplishing strategic operational change in a large complex environment. Colorado Animal Specialty & Emergency (CASE) is a newly constructed 37,000 square foot referral specialty and emergency veterinary hospital. The team of 130+ employees at CASE consists of approximately 30+ doctors and 100+ staff. Our multi-disciplinary specialty and emergency teams work under one roof, allowing our doctors and veterinary nurses to collaborate and provide the most comprehensive and advanced level of care possible to the pets in our communities. CASE offers numerous services led by highly skilled specialists, with a focus on cutting edge medicine, close partnerships with our local veterinary community, and dedicated client care.

Job Summary


The Hospital Director has overall accountability for the operational and financial management of the hospital. The Hospital Director performs a wide range of complex administrative activities related to the hospital in providing quality patient care and excellent client service, management of finances and accounting, marketing and promotion of services, staffing and human resources, and discretionary activities, that serve to support the hospital.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Planning

  • Interfaces and collaborates with NVA Compassion-First Shared Services departments as needed to ensure that the hospital goals are met.
  • Meet regularly with managers to discuss, evaluate, and plan for the welfare of the practice. Attend corporate meetings.
  • Monitor employee competence and effectiveness through manager feedback and observation as well as staff performance and salary reviews.
  • Assign job responsibilities to managers and delegate as necessary.
  • Operations
  • Manage hospital operations and financial health of a $20mm+ P&L hospital.
  • Responsible for policy enforcement as well as overseeing disciplinary actions and terminations.
  • Read and respond to all communication in a timely manner to ensure that NVA Compassion-First policies, guidelines and recommendations are quickly communicated to hospital staff and adequate training follows if needed.
  • Performs other duties essential to the performance of the hospital as assigned.
  • Ensure that the OSHA and Safety program and procedures are being monitored and updated so that the hospital is in safety compliance.

People Management

  • Oversees the hospitals leadership team, support staff, and conducts staff meetings.
  • Responsible for overseeing the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of staff.
  • Responsible for overseeing the recruitment, interviewing, contract negotiation, and hiring doctors in conjunction with the Medical Director.
  • Drive hospital culture, cementing CASE as the Employer of Choice in the region
  • Support HR initiatives and programs – such as onboarding, team-building, and recognition – which reinforce the hospital’s culture and values.
  • Direct and develop the veterinary and technical staff towards the goals needed for state-of-the-art quality patient care and excellence

Client Service

  • Oversee client flow to ensure that clients and patients are seen and treated in a professional, timely and competent manner.
  • Responsible for administration and review of non-medical client complaints.
  • Understand, participate and support planned marketing events and programs and ensure that the hospital staff utilizes marketing tools and materials and events and programs.

Financial

  • Review income statements and other financial data to find ways to improve revenue and profit.
  • Ensures payroll is accurately completed and submitted for all hospital staff.
  • Oversee billing, calculations of any discounts, and other special accounts.
  • Monitor purchasing so the practice operates within budget. Monitor the staff scheduling so that the practice operates within budget. Monitor and approve all expenditures within Compassion-First guidelines.
  • Meet regularly with veterinarians to review financial performance.
  • Review accounts receivable to confirm proper and timely processing.


Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Business or related discipline with 5+ years of business operations required (DVM or VMD encouraged to apply.) Veterinary or human healthcare hospital management is beneficial, but not required.
  • CVPM highly desired

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a medical care facility operations management with profit and loss responsibility
  • Knowledge of financial budget management.
  • Knowledge of sales and marketing techniques.
  • Background in managing service-oriented operations.
  • Ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts.
  • Ability to take information obtained from clients, staff, and other sources, discern that which is credible and assess the hospital and its operation objectively.
  • Must be able to multi-task and deal with high levels of stress in an environment of changing priorities.
