Position Summary: Responsible for providing specialized human resources tasks for the department while maintaining confidentiality. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate employee data, processing related forms and documents, and providing customer service to employees, candidates, and hiring managers. Duties may involve one or more human resources functions, including but not limited to: benefits administration, leave management, recruiting and onboarding, training and development, employee evaluation, and/or employee relations.

Essential Functions:

  • Support daily operations for the Human Resources Department.
  • Accurately create, maintain, and update personnel and/or employee records in PokagonNet and databases with all applicable employee-related data.
  • Respond to employment verification requests for loans, unemployment claims, new employment, etc.
  • Assist with Training and Development as required.
  • Maintain personnel and medical files.
  • Maintain the HR publishing and team sites on PokagonNet.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of Employees and departmental information.
  • Account for new hires, terminations, and changes in HR systems
  • Coordination of pre-employment screening tests, background checks, drug screens, and payment of related invoices.
  • Assist with administration of employee benefits, including processing benefit/enrollment applications and supporting documents; disseminating benefits information and literature to employees at request and during New Hire Orientation.
  • Collaborate with Payroll/Finance and other departments to ensure payroll deductions are accurate (including appropriate garnishments).
  • Fulfills reporting requirements of all relevant government rules and regulations, including the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  • Track and/or administer HR programs including EAP, ACA, COBRA, FML, STD, LTD, Workers Compensation, Retirement/Pension Plan.
  • Provides a high level of customer service in managing the requisition process, collaborating with and guiding hiring managers in comprehensive recruitment and staffing issues, policies, and processes.
  • Establishes, cultivates, and maintains ongoing relationships with hiring managers in order to understand the Pokagon Band and its recruitment and training needs within the context of the Band’s mission; develops and maintains a strong rapport with department leaders; attends departmental staff and other meetings as requested to acquire knowledge about the department's objectives, goals, operations and work culture.
  • Sets expectations (develop roles and responsibilities). Provides counsel and expertise in all areas of recruitment and staffing (e.g., search firms, and advertising.)
  • Develops recruitment plan based on department needs that clearly define and commit to service and key performance indicators; influences strategic staffing decisions such as succession planning, training, and career development.
  • Executes recruitment plan by recruiting for well-qualified preference candidates from a variety of sources, managing selection process to include interviewing, assessing candidates, screening, and recommending finalists.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Represents and promotes Pokagon Band at a variety of functions.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field. Five (5) years of relevant experience in lieu of degree may be accepted or a combination of both education and experience. Degree must be from an accredited institution whose program of study has been recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the United States Department of Education.
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR), SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) Certification, and/or Tribal Human Resource Professional (THRP) preferred. Must be willing to attain.
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience and a thorough understanding in the areas of benefit administration (qualifying events, COBRA, ACA, etc.), leave management (FML and STD), and recruiting and onboarding is required.
  • Experience in training and development in the areas of creating, scheduling, and facilitating training courses is preferred.
  • Intermediate skills with MS Office Applications required.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills; and the ability to speak effectively before groups of employees and respond to questions required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is generally sedentary in nature and will frequently require sitting, however standing and walking will occasionally be necessary.
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate equipment.
  • Frequently required to talk and hear.

Work Environment:

  • General office environment. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.
  • Local travel is necessary, so the ability to travel as needed is required.
