Position: HVAC Testing, Adjusting, & Balancing (TAB) Technician

Job Summary: This is an entry level position responsible for learning proficiency in Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing while performing diversified duties as a TAB Technician.

Role: Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing (TAB) is an important part of mechanical HVAC systems. On a basic level, TAB technicians ensure the cooling or process related airflow(s) and/or waterflow(s) are delivered efficiently, quietly, and safely throughout a system. A certified TAB technician should be able to complete a forensic evaluation of a system to determine possible areas of efficiency loss and comprise while developing potential scenarios for resolution(s).

TAB technicians are responsible for balancing air and hydronic systems to meet specifications outlined by the design engineer and project documents while meeting or exceeding the standards given by the AABC (Associated Air Balance Council). Technicians are required to learn HVAC systems and fluid flow systems for analysis based on measurements obtained during the Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing process. This system analysis is instrumental in the identification process for determining the necessary adjustments for meeting the required parameters and to efficiently evaluate and resolve issues which may be encountered.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Take a proactive approach in participating in the company’s AABC TAB Technician Training Program to ensure all required AABC and company standards and practices are maintained.
  • Inspect systems to verify compliance with plans and specifications and to detect potential or existing malfunctions in system components.
  • Adjust systems for meeting the required settings through performance testing.
  • Testing the performance of air and hydronic systems, using tools and specialized (company provided) test equipment, such as a/an Pitot tube, Manometer, Anemometer, Velometer, Tachometer, Psychrometer, and Thermometer, to isolate problems and determine necessary adjustments.
  • Discuss system operations with end users to verify that malfunctions have been corrected.
  • Diagnose, Test, Adjust, and Balance system components to achieve optimal system performance.
  • Investigate system and operational deficiencies to determine corrective actions.
  • Read and interpret project mechanical drawings, specifications, and equipment performance data to determine proper balancing techniques and project management approaches.
  • Prepare each project by conducting a system design review and assembling the required test forms for documentation purposes.
  • Maintain proper documentation of daily activities using project specific reporting procedures. All Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing performed and any issues discovered are to be addressed fully using clear verbiage and accompanied with supporting documentation (as required).
  • The use of ladders is required to complete the task of Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing of air and hydronic systems. All employees must possess the ability to safely exercise ladder usage.

Restrictive access requirements:

  • Approved access to government facilities based on personal background checks completed by Capital Air Balance and/or the United States Government (US Government entities, subsidiaries, or approved organizations). If non-approval (for access to government installations) is returned following an access request for any current employee or potential employee, employment eligibility may be revoked.

Knowledge:

  • Mathematical proficiency is a necessity for completing basic and advanced equations associated with Air and Hydronic balancing.
  • Learn and understand the operational characteristics and capabilities of all required test equipment prior to project commencement.
  • Continuously educate oneself to become capable of performing assigned tasks without direct, full time supervision.
  • Learn and understand the design intent of each given system associated with a project prior to project commencement (some research may be required).
  • Ability to review and understand mechanical, plumbing, control schematics, and other documents associated with projects.
  • Ability to read and understand the statement of work (SOW) for each project.
  • Ability to read and understand sequence of operation (SOO) for all associated systems of each project.
  • The ability to learn, understand, and successfully incorporate the procedures for Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing systems as required by the AABC (Associated Air Balance Council) based on the AABC Technician Training Manual – The Fundamentals of Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing HVAC Systems.
  • Ability to understand and analyze mechanical HVAC systems for determining issues and determining basic recommendations for issue resolution(s).

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, move, and carry equipment (up to 50 pounds)

Educational/Experience requirements:

  • High School Diploma and/or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of one-year experience in the TAB industry (Preferred but not required)

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour
